Bromham 1-2 Calne Eagles

Friendly Match - 28th August

Calne Eagles completed their pre-season programme with a hard fought 2-1 win against an experienced Bromham side.

Bromham controlled large periods of the first half and they took a deserved lead after 15 minutes when Jim Sandiford fired home an unstoppable shot from 20 yards out. Bromham nearly doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when a neat move saw Danny Powell cross the ball to Jim Sandiford, who saw his shot bounce off the inside of the Calne’s post and role agonisingly along the goal-line before being cleared to safety by Kev Hamersley.

However, despite being under constant pressure Calne defended stoutly and just before half time they managed to equalise against the run of play. Energetic striker Shaun Jefferies got in behind Bromham’s defence and although he didn’t make great contact with the ball, his shot still managed to find the back of the net.

In the second half Bromham took the opportunity to experiment with their line-up and this seemed to reduce their cutting edge in front of goal. They still played some neat football but Calne started to look for more comfortable and their extra pace in attacking positions led to the game becoming a far more even affair.

Calne won the game with 10 minutes to go when good work from Brett Cullen set up his strike partner Andy Stickley, who coolly slotted the ball home from 8 yards out.

The Eagles’ have had a promising pre-season campaign, with good competitive performances in all four matches. Hopefully if we can maintain that same level of form going into this coming season we can improve on last year’s tenth place finish.
