2010/11 Season
Trowbridge Wanderers Res 4-1 Calne Eagles
League Match - 7th May 2011
Trowbridge Wanderers secured the fourth place spot in division 2
with a well deserved 4-1 win against a below par Calne Eagles.
The first half was a very open and even encounter. Calne’s
Brett
Cullen and
Sam Rogers both had good chances to give the away side
the lead but failed to seriously test Aaron Harford in Wanderers’
goal. At the other end, Calne’s 49 year old reserve goalkeeper
Kev
Windsor made a string of good saves in his first game of the season.
Trowbridge took the lead just before half time when veteran striker
Nigel Penelhum sent a looping header into the top corner, following
good work from Gavin Francis.
Calne’s
Shaun Jefferies found the back of the net at the start of
the second half, but despite there being no flag, the goal was ruled
out for offside. Trowbridge doubled their lead soon after, when Gavin
Francis headed home from a corner kick.
Midfielder
Aaron Hopkins scored a superb individual goal that gave
Calne a route back into the game. However, instead of initiating a
comeback it seemed to inspire Trowbridge into their most dominant
period of the game.
Wanderers’ substitute Dan Mercer scored a great individual goal with
20 minutes to go and Nigel Penelhum rounded off a great performance
with a unstoppable shot to make the score 4-1 with 15 minutes left.
The one way traffic continued and only some wasteful finishing and
some good saves from Kev Windsor kept the score at 4-1.
Calne Eagles 0-3 Bratton
League Match - 30th April 2011
Bratton kept their promotion push with a comfortable 3-0 win over
Calne Eagles.
After an even start, Bratton took the lead after 15 minutes when
Neil Gordon latched onto a through ball and finished coolly past
Andy Windsor in Calne’s goal.
This goal seemed to knock Calne out of their stride and Bratton
dominated the game through to half time. They missed numerous good
chances, especially from corners, with both Neil Gordon and Richard
Wyatt heading wide. However, the inevitable second goal did come on
38 minutes when Neil Gordon put the finishing touch to a superb team
goal.
The second half was a much more even affair and Calne fashioned two
really good chances to get themselves back in the game through Shaun
Jefferies. However, the usually prolific striker was unable to find
the target on this occasion.
Bratton finally secured the points with 10 minutes left, when
Richard Wyatt was left unmarked at the far post from a free kick and
forced the ball over the line from close range.
.
Melksham Town Reserves 3-0 Calne Eagles
League Match - 23rd April 2011
Melksham Town Reserves got the points they needed to secure the
Second Division Championship, but were made to fight all the way
against a spirited Calne Eagles. The visitors were in the game right
up until the last three minutes of play, when the hosts scored two
quick-fire goals.
The contrasting styles of the teams were evident from the start.
Melksham had the lion’s share of the possession and showed the
quality that has seen them run away with the league, while Calne
defended stubbornly and relied on their pace in attack at the other
end.
Melksham created early chances and were prevented from taking the
lead, when Eagles’ Keeper Andy Windsor superbly tipped Rob Manning’s
shot around the post. Centre Back James Eatough also saw a
thunderous back-post volley whistle just over from a corner kick.
At the other end, Calne’s Brett Cullen also had two great chances to
open the scoring. First, he saw a rasping shot from outside the box
tipped over the bar by Gareth Evans in goal. Moments later, Cullen
went clean through on goal, but after checking twice to see if he
was actually onside, the big striker sent his shot high and wide of
the goal.
In the second half, Melksham’s extra fitness started to tell and
they slowly started to grind their visitors down. However, they
still found clear-cut chances extremely difficult to come by, and it
wasn’t until the 70th minute that they opened the scoring, when
prolific striker Dan Moore headed home Nathan Walker’s cross.
Five minutes later, Calne once again nearly scored when Matt
Fleming’s delicate lob from outside the box only just cleared the
bar with Gareth Evans well beaten.
In the closing minutes, Dan Moore got his second with another superb
header, and with literally the last kick of the game Ethan Cox
forced the ball home after a goal-mouth scramble.
Calne Eagle 1-2 Warminster Town Reserves
League Match 16th April 2011
Both Calne Eagles and Warminster Town Reserves were forced to field
weakened teams in this second division clash. Eagles were without
strikers of Ben Wickens, Brett Cullen and Shaun Jefferies. While
Warminster could only raise the bare eleven, which included their
veteran manager Andy McFarren, who was forced play himself in
attack.
Warminster raced into an early lead when Ash Bodman’s shot from 20
yards took a slight deflection off centre-half Roy Wenham and
slipped past Andy Windsor in Calne’s goal. Ash Bodman got his second
goal after only 14 minutes when his team had hit Calne Eagles with a
lightning counterattack from a corner
.
Despite the score line the balance of the game had been very
balanced and this continued throughout. Both teams enjoyed a lot of
good possession as the game ebbed and flowed.
Calne Eagles got themselves back in the game with half an hour left
when Kev Hamersley tapped home from close range following a Stu
Windsor corner.
With 10 minutes left, makeshift striker Matt Fleming hit the post
with a prodded shot from close range. But this was the closest that
the home side came to an equaliser and Warminster held on to take
all 3 points.
FC Northbridge 1-3 Calne Eagles
League match - 9th April 2011
Calne Eagles’ all-time top goal scorer
Shaun
Jefferies scored a superb brace as his side put in a commanding
team performance, winning 3-1 against fellow mid-table side FC
Northbridge.
Calne took the lead after 22 minutes, when their captain
Stu
Windsor played a pass forward to Jefferies, who controlled the
ball superbly with his chest just inside the box, before turning to
fire an unstoppable shot past Dave Bradbeer in goal.
The Eagles appeared unlucky not to extend their lead soon after.
Shaun Jefferies was flagged offside, but as the striker stood idle,
his team mate Stu Windsor burst forward towards goal from inside his
own half, but was unfortunately still penalised for offside as soon
as he touched the ball.
Windsor’s dignified incredulity was further increased just before
half-time, when he coolly controlled the ball with his chest under
no pressure just inside his own penalty area and found himself
penalised for handball. Northbridge’s centre forward Liam Brown
dispensed the resulting penalty to leave the game evenly poised at
half-time.
Calne continued to create the better chances in the second half and
took lead after 49 minutes through the game’s second penalty, after
Calne’s Brett Cullen was adjudged to have been pushed inside the
box. Stu Windsor confidently tucked away the spot-kick to retake the
lead for his side.
Five minutes later, Shaun Jefferies completed the scoring with
another fine finish, after
Brett Cullen
had headed goalkeeper
Andy
Windsor’s long ball up field into his path.
FC Northbridge forced Calne deep in the closing stages, but the away
side held firm the claim the three points.
Calne Eagles 1-1 Castle Combe
League Match - 5th April 2011
Castle Combe’s promotion chances took a knock when they were held to
a 1-1 draw in a attacking and entertaining game against mid-table
Calne Eagles.
Weary of Castle Combe’s highly dangerous long-throw tactic, Calne
Eagles went into the game with a slightly different formation. They
played striker Brett Cullen in a deeper role, and the big target man
put in a man-of-the-match performance, quite literally heading clear
everything that Castle Combe could throw at his side.
Castle Combe started the game on the front foot, nearly taking the
lead after only 30 seconds, when Mark Sharratt outpaced centre-back
Roy Wenham but was foiled by Eagles’ Keeper Andy Windsor. Castle
Combe continued to dominate possession, creating half chances for
both Karl Sharratt and Wesley Christian.
Calne Eagles soon found their feet, and with their pace and energy
in attack, they always looked capable of creating chances. However,
they took the lead in unusual circumstances after 20 minutes, when
the referee chose to ignore a dubious-looking offside flag. In the
confusion that followed, Martin Riddell headed Sam Rogers’ cross
into his own net.
Shortly after, Combe keeper Luke Jones had an extremely lucky
escape, when his scuffed goal-kick fell straight to Ben Wickens but
the usually clinical striker put his shot just wide of the post.
Calne continued to create opportunities during the rest of the half.
Shaun Jefferies was twice denied by Jones in goal, and Ben Wickens
put a rasping shot into the side netting.
In the second half, Combe upped their game and the balance of play
was delicately poised. With 18 minutes remaining, Wesley Christian
equalised when he headed home a free kick from close range.
This setup a frenetic end to the game as both teams went all out for
the points. Sam Rogers struck Combe’s crossbar with a superb volley from distance. At the other end, Carl Dawson also saw a rasping shot
cannon back of the bar.
In the final minutes, Shaun Jefferies thought he had scored the
winner, but his close-range shot was superbly saved by Luke Jones.
And finally, with almost the last kick off the game, Calne fullback
Kev Hamersley somehow managed to divert Matt White’s goal-bound shot
over the crossbar with his outstretched leg.
Calne Eagles 2-5 Worton & Cheverell
League Match - 2nd April 2011
This mid-table clash between Calne Eagles and Worton & Cheverell saw
the visitors come out on top 5-2, thanks largely to a superb
hat-trick from their prolific striker Myles Hickton.
In a tight first-half, Worton took the lead after 10 minutes, when
Myles Hickton beat three defenders on the touchline, before setting
up Angus Webster to score from 10 yards out. They doubled their lead
early in the second half, when Hickton once again made his trademark
move, cutting inside his marker to score from just inside the box.
Calne then had their best period of the game and mounted a gallant
comeback. On 61 minutes, good work from Ben Wickens on the left wing
set up midfielder Tom Evans, who tapped the ball home from close
range. Wickens then added to his own impressive goals tally with 20
minutes left, when he went clean through on goal, and although his
first shot was saved by Tom North in Worton’s goal, the rebound went
straight back to the striker, who rolled the ball into the empty
net.
Moments later, Wickens went clean through on goal once more, but Tom
North produced a great save to prevent Eagles taking the lead. This
probably proved a turning point, as with 15 minutes left, a great
pass from Dan Kingsbury sent Myles Hickton through on goal, where he
finished with a cheeky lob over advancing keeper Andy Windsor.
Thereafter, Calne pushed forward for the equaliser, which left them
exposed at the other end. The impressive Angus Webster put the game
out of Calne’s reach with a superb individual goal, and Myles
Hickton completed his hat-trick in the dying moments, when he headed
home a free kick to complete the 5-2 score line.
Both games between these two clubs this season have been incredibly
sporting encounters, and referee Stephen Cook congratulated both
sets of players on their behaviour after the match.
Heytesbury 3-1 Calne Eagles
League Match - 19th March 2011
A superb strike from Chris Baker helped Heytesbury earn a deserved
3-1 win against Calne Eagles, which could prove crucial in their
battle to avoid relegation.
Calne Eagles went in at the break 1-0 up, after Tom Evans had scored
his first goal of the season with a composed finish from 12 yards.
This score line reflected the balance of the game in the first half.
However, in the second half, Heytesbury really upped their game and
dominated most of the play. Calne defended stoutly, but as they
struggled to get their usual passing going, it seemed like only a
matter of time before the pressure would tell.
Heytesbury’s breakthrough came on the hour, when Paul Dredge
powerfully headed home from six yards after a long throw had been
flicked on by Sam Sweetman. Calne still continued to defend
doggedly, but they had no answer to Chris Baker’s curler from just
outside the box, which gave goalkeeper Andy Windsor absolutely no
chance.
With 15 minutes still remaining, Calne did manage to exert some
pressure on Heytesbury’s goal. Ben Wickens saw a good chance blocked
bravely by Kieran Edwards. Kev Hamersley headed a Matt Fleming
corner over the bar and Stu Windsor also saw a powerful strike just
miss the target.
Heytesbury took full advantage of the gaps being left at the other
end, and Sam Sweetman killed the game off with three minutes left
when he was afforded a free shot from 10 yards after being set up by
Heytesbury’s aptly named sub Liam Loft.
Worton & Cheverell 1-2 Calne Eagles
League Match - 12th March 2010
Worton & Cheverell dropped three valuable points at home with a 2-1
defeat against Calne Eagles.
The home side did exceptionally well to find a qualified referee for
the game, after a shortage of registered referees had left the match
without an appointed official. The man in the middle, Steve Cox, had
a superb game throughout, although his job was made easier due to
great sporting behaviour from both sides.
Calne started the game well and
Stu Windsor was unlucky not to
continue his recent goal-scoring form when he saw a good effort
cannon back off the crossbar.
Kev Hamersley
also came close to
opening the scoring for the Eagles, when he pounced on a knock-down
from Brett Cullen, but his close range shot was well saved by Worton
keeper Stuart Swan.
As the first half progressed, a stiff wind started to develop, which
had an increasing effect on the game. Calne who were playing into
the wind found themselves forced deep as Worton controlled
possession.
The home side took the lead after 29 minutes, when Calne left-back
Gary Wootten got caught in possession by Myles Hickton, who then
passed the ball out wide to Ben Mason, whose cross was tapped-in by
Daniel Lyons at the far post. For the remainder of the half, Worton
continued to have the better of the play but struggled to find a way
past Calne’s resolute defence.
Calne equalised on 62 minutes with a very direct goal. Brett Cullen
flicked goalkeeper
Andy Windsor’s long ball down field into the path
of Ben Wickens, who coolly tapped the ball past onrushing goalkeeper
Stuart Swan. Four minutes later, the prolific Wickens once again
latched onto a long ball up field, this time from centre-back Roy
Wenham, to score what proved to be the winning goal. Indeed, the
striker could have crowned a devastating five minute spell when he
once again went through on goal, but saw his delicate lob just clear
the bar.
As Worton pushed hard for the equalizer, Calne had to concede
several corners. Daniel Lyons nearly got his second of the game when
his improvised back-heel from a goalmouth scramble bounced back off
the crossbar, and Myles Hickton also saw a clever effort fizz just
wide of the post. Eagles’ keeper Andy Windsor also had to make two
smart saves late on, but Calne held firm to claim all three
points.
Warminster Town Reserves 0-3 Calne Eagles
League Match - 5th March 2011
Calne Eagles overcame Warminster Town Reserves 3-0 in Division Two,
although the margin of their win did not do justice to the closeness
of the game. The match was evenly balanced and entertaining
throughout and Eagles only made certain of the points in the closing
stages when their box-to-box midfielder
Sam Rogers
chalked up his 6th goal of the season.
Calne were particularly happy with the points, as they had to
make-do without their talismanic front-man
Ben Wickens.
Nonetheless, the 15-goal striker’s boots were amply filled by a rare
appearance from
Shaun
Jefferies, who despite not scoring had a superb game upfront.
Warminster’s youthful side started the contest at a brisk pace and
inside the first minute Calne goalkeeper
Andy Windsor
had to tip a dipping Chikiah Selassie shot over the bar. They went
even closer moments later when Warminster captain Kevin Sparey saw a
cracking shot from distance cannon back off the crossbar.
Warminster’s energetic five-man midfield continued to cause the away
team trouble and Nicholas Shuttlewood and Chikiah Selassie both
missed half-chances to give them the lead. In response Calne’s best
scoring opportunities were coming from dead-ball situations, with
Matt Fleming
delivering numerous teasing free-kicks into Warminster’s penalty
area.
On 32 minutes, somewhat against the run of play, Calne took the lead
when their striker
Brett Cullen
got the slightest touch on a Stu Windsor pass, which was just enough
to divert the ball past Warminster goalkeeper Paul Colbourne and
into the empty net.
The second half continued to be played at a tremendous pace but both
defences appeared to be in control and chances to score were at a
premium. Shaun Jefferies came closest to scoring when he went
through on goal but saw his shot well-saved by Paul Colbourne.
Calne did, however, double their lead after 73 minutes with a
highly-contested goal. Shaun Jefferies bumped into his marker just
inside Warminster’s half, and while all the defenders and strikers
alike stood waiting for the whistle to blow, Eagles’
captain
Stu Windsor latched onto the loose ball and raced unchallenged
towards goal to score with a cool finish.
Warminster continued to press hard for a route back into the game
and got men forward in numbers. They forced several corners and free
kicks and Calne had to survive a few goalmouth scrambles. But once
Sam Rogers tapped in from close range with six minutes left,
following good work from Shaun Jefferies, the Eagles knew the points
were safe.
Warminster’s young side clearly felt frustrated by the result, but
with so many promising players coming through, it would appear only
a matter of time before their fortunes will change.
Westwood Social 0-7 Calne Eagles
League Match - 26th February 2011
Westwood’s season of woe continued against the vastly improved Calne
Eagles, who ran out comfortable 7-0 winners on a quagmire of a pitch
at Bobbin Lane. The visitor’s win owed much to the superb
performances from brothers
Andy and
Stu
Windsor. Midfielder and Captain Stu notched up a hat-trick of
goals, as his older brother and goalkeeper, Andy, made a hat-trick
of superb saves at the other end.
Matches between Westwood and Calne Eagles have historically been
very even affairs. With the home team fielding a strong looking
line-up, this game looked to be heading for another close
score-line. However, with both teams playing attacking football and
defenders struggling to stand up in muddy conditions, it soon became
clear that each side would create plenty of chances.
After just three minutes, a neat finish from Stu Windsor gave Calne
Eagles the lead, and they then doubled their lead ten minutes later,
when pacy striker
Ben Wickens
went clean through on goal and finished in typically competent
style. Undaunted, Westwood came back strong. Dan Thorne hit the post
and also saw a good goal-bound effort saved by Andy Windsor. Eagles’
on-form goalkeeper also tipped a rasping shot from Paul Reynolds
over the bar and dealt superbly with numerous shots as Westwood
sought a foothold back into the game.
Eagles made the score 3-0 after 27 minutes, when goalkeeper Martin
Cowdrey could only parry
Tom Evans’
free kick straight into the path of Stu Windsor, who tapped in from
close range. For the rest of half, Calne totally dominated
possession and had numerous clear chances to further extend the
lead. Then with the the half drawing to a close,
Brett Cullen
tapped home from close range following good work from
Sam Rogers
and Kev
Hamersley.
Mindful of nearly surrendering a four goal advantage against
Westwood in December, Calne started the second half in tentative
mood. But once Ben Wickens scored his 15th goal of the season with a
superb shot on 52 minutes, Calne once again took control. Stu
Windsor completed his hat-trick with a long range strike, to take
his tally for the season to 10 goals and Brett Cullen also added to
the score. Andy Windsor ensured his team’s first clean sheet of the
season when he tipped
Gary
Wootten’s sliced clearance over the bar in the closing minutes.
Calne Eagles 1-2 North Bradley
League Match - 5th February 2011
North Bradley came out on top against Calne Eagles with a 2-1 win,
in a tight and attacking game at Beversbrook.
Calne made the best possible start and took the lead after only two
minutes. A long clearance down field from their goalkeeper Andy
Windsor found
Brett Cullen, who then sent
Ben Wickens clean through
on goal with a well-weighted pass. Wickens finished off the chance
with a neat left-footed finish past Mark Binns in Bradley’s goal.
However, Bradley were soon level when their captain Neil Hannaford
scored with superb shot from just outside the box. Both teams got
men forward throughout the first half and created good chances to
score. Mike Little put a close-range effort over the bar for North
Bradley, as did Calne’s
Sam Rogers at the other end.
Just before half-time, Mike Little scored what proved to be the
winning goal when he redirected a fierce Paul Ranger volley into the
top corner from close range.
The second half was equally entertaining with both teams creating
numerous chances.
Tom Evans,
Graham Stickley and Ben Wickens all
went close for Calne. At the other end, Neil Hannaford rattled the
cross bar with another great strike and Mike Little and Jack Parker
both brought good saves out of Andy Windsor.
In the closing minutes, North Bradley had to soak up a lot of
pressure. Calne saw a penalty shout turned down, after one of North
Bradley's defenders fell on the ball and appeared to handle it with
both hands, and with the last attack of the game, a
Gary Wootten
corner was headed over the bar from four yards out by
Kev Hamersley.
Calne Eagles 4-3 FC Northbridge
League Match - 22nd January 2011
Calne Eagles came from 3-0 down against FC Northbridge to claim
their sixth league win in their last 7 matches.
In an entertaining first half, both teams played a lot of neat
passing football without really creating too many clear cut chances.
Ben Tiling’s cross hit the post for Northbridge and Craig Brown also
saw a rasping shot from distance graze Calne’s crossbar. At the
other end,
Sam Rogers had a close-range shot superbly blocked and
Ben Wickens fired wide of the goal from a very tight angle. But just
as the half was coming to an end, a defensive mistake from Calne
gifted Northbridge’s David Bradbeer the opportunity to opening the
scoring.
Northbridge found themselves 2-0 up right at the start of the second
half, when a fresh-air clearance from Calne unfortunately let in
Kyle Leather, who placed the ball skillfully past keeper
Andy
Windsor. Moments later, Northbridge appeared to put the game beyond
Calne’s reach when Matthew Thomas prodded the ball home following a
corner kick.
Shell-shocked Calne, who had competed well up until this point, then
found themselves on the back foot for the next 15 minutes. During
this time Northbridge dominated possession and missed numerous
gilt-edged chances to further extend their lead.
However, Calne re-grouped and once again started to get their
passing game going. With 12 minutes remaining, they gave themselves
a glimmer of hope when Ben Wickens outpaced his marker out wide on
the touchline and, with no covering defender, went clean through on
goal to make the score 3-1. Nonetheless, this goal still seemed to
be nothing more than a consolation as the game entered its final
five minutes. Then Calne transformed the score-line by scoring three
goals in quick succession.
The mayhem began when Eagles’ striker Brett Cullen headed the ball
against the crossbar from a Matt Fleming corner. Northbridge’s
clearance found Ben Wickens on the edge of the box, who let fly a
stunning shot that cannoned off the inside of both posts before
finding the back of the net. Calne hurried the ball back to the
halfway line and within 60 seconds had equalised. Sam Rogers, who
had been outstanding throughout, intercepted the ball straight from
the kick-off and played a square pass to Brett Cullen and then just
kept running. Cullen returned the favour by playing a superbly
weighted ball, which sent Rogers clean through on goal to score his
fifth strike of the season.
Calne’s superb win was completed with just two minutes left on the
clock, when target man Brett Cullen found himself clean through on
goal from a Ben Wickens’ pass and coolly slotted the winning goal
past Stuart Powell in Northbridge’s goal.
Calne Eagles 4-3 Westwood Social
League Match - 11th December 2010
Calne Eagles picked up their third league win in their last four
matches with a hard fought 4-3 win over Westwood, who very nearly
staged a remarkable comeback from 4-0 down.
Not for the first time this season, Calne started the game in
clinical fashion and within 30 minutes had established a 4-0 lead.
They opened the scoring after 5 minutes, when Westwood keeper Martin
Cowdrey made a smart save from
Stu Windsor, only to see the ball
rebound to left-winger
Shaun Jefferies, who poked the ball over the
line from five yards out. Jefferies then got his second of the game
after 14 minutes, when he was unselfishly set-up by Calne’s top
scorer Ben Wickens. Moments later, Wickens scored his tenth of the
season with a neat finish, following a good pass from Stu Windsor.
Calne rounded off a superb period of attacking play when Ben Wickens
once again turned provider by setting up energetic midfielder
Sam
Rogers, who finished from close range.
Despite the score line, Westwood always looked capable of causing
Calne’s defence problems. They gave themselves a glimmer of hope
just before half-time, when their top marksman Dan Thorne threaded
the ball through to Ben Cowdrey, who forced the ball past keeper
Andy Windsor from 6 yards. Prior to that they had also struck the
crossbar and seen two goal-bound efforts excellently saved by
Windsor.
Westwood started the second half in the ascendancy and consequently
enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession. With 27 minutes
remaining, they reduced the deficit to 4-2 when Paul Reynolds got in
behind Calne’s defence and struck a sweet shot into the top corner
of the goal. Then 5 minutes later, the comeback was really on the
cards when Sam Simpson’s cross-come-shot flew into the goal.
However, this goal seemed to galvanise Calne, and although Westwood
pressed hard for the equaliser and won numerous corners, they found
chances very hard to come by. As a result, Calne hung on to claim
all three points.
Calne Eagles 3-6 The Deverills
27th November KO Cup 2nd Round
The Deverills booked their place in the quarter-finals of the KO Cup
with a hard fought 6-3 win over Calne Eagles.
Eagles took the lead after only three minutes, when good work from
Alec Wells sent
Ben Wickens clean through on goal to score his
eighth goal of the season.
However, despite this setback, The Deverills totally dominated the
early stages as Calne, who were missing influential defender
Gary
Wootten, struggled to cope with their opponent’s neat and quick
passing football. So it was no surprise when The Deverills equalised
through Lee Carpenter after only ten minutes.
Thereafter, the relentless pressure continued and only some
impressive goalkeeping from Calne’s
Andy Windsor
kept The Deverills
at bay. But after 25 minutes, The Deverills dominance was rewarded
when Reuben Spong scored from close range following another superb
passing move.
After 30 minutes, Calne re-jigged their line-up and brought on sub
Tom Evans, which seemed to readdress the balance of the game.
Calne’s improved play saw them opening the second half with a new
confidence that they could get back into the game, which they did in
the 58th minute. Ben Wickens picked up the ball just outside the
penalty area and evaded two tackles before placing his shot coolly
past Scott Lewis in goal.
The Deverills re-took the lead once again with 24 minutes left, when
Kev Hamersley’s goal line clearance cannoned off team mate
Roy
Wenham’s arm from close range. Despite clearly not intending to
handle, as the ball was heading to safety, a penalty was awarded,
from which Scott Gallazi scored. The Deverills then doubled their
lead when lively striker Mike Payne pounced on the rebound after Andy Windsor had excellently saved from Gary Lewis.
In the last 15 minutes, with nothing to lose Calne pressed forward
and actually managed to pull the score back to 4-3, when their
skipper
Stu Windsor
superbly finished off a great team move that had
been started on the edge of their penalty area. However, as the game
became really stretched, Deverills’ front-man Gary Lewis put the
game beyond Calne’s reach with two clinical goals in the last five
minutes.
Both teams have also been drawn against each other in the A&B Cup,
and after such an entertaining and sporting contest, that game is
something that both sides will be looking forward to contesting.
Calne Eagles 4-1 Broughton Gifford
A&B Cup 1st Round - 20th November 2010
Second Division Calne Eagles caused an upset in the A&B Cup first
round when they overcame First Division opponents Broughton Gifford
4-1. The main damage was done in the first half as Broughton, who
went into the game off the back of an eight-game unbeaten run,
failed to play to their usual high standard and found Calne in
unforgiving mood.
Calne opened the scoring after 15 minutes when
Brett Cullen’s
flicked header fell to
Ben Wickens, who fired his shot past
Broughton goalkeeper John Wiltshire from close range. They doubled
their lead 10 minutes later when
Stu Windsor converted from the spot
after the lively Wickens had been felled inside the box. Brett
Cullen also got on the score sheet for the third consecutive game,
when he tapped in from close range to give his side a 3-0 half-time
lead.
In the second half, Broughton Gifford raised their game and enjoyed
plenty of good possession. But they were denied a route back into
the game early on, when Eagles’ keeper
Andy Windsor brilliantly
tipped Dan Hibberd’s goal-bound shot over the bar. Soon after, they
were denied again, when their sub Olly Woodland saw his superb drive
cannon back off the post.
However, despite having to defend deep, Calne always looked
dangerous on the counterattack. After 58 minutes, they put the
result beyond doubt when Brett Cullen’s pass found Ben Wickens, who
rounded the keeper before squaring the ball to winger
Sam Rogers,
who finished from six yards out.
Calne’s Stu Windsor also had a penalty saved by John Wiltshire, who
was incredibly lucky to remain on the pitch after cynically fouling
Ben Wickens, after the striker had dribbled past him and could have
rolled the ball into an empty net.
In the last 20 minutes, Broughton threw caution to the wind and
piled forward in numbers. But some stubborn defending and good
goalkeeping kept the score at 4-0. At the other end of the pitch,
Calne found themselves continually frustrated by numerous incredibly
close offside decisions.
With five minutes left, Broughton’s Olly Woodland scored his fifth
goal of the season, striking the ball into the bottom corner from
the edge of the box.
Bromham 2-5 Calne Eagles
League Match - 6th November 2010
Bromham’s 100% winning start to the season came to an abrupt end
against Calne Eagles, who scored all five of their goals in a manic
20 minute spell during the first half.
The game started off very evenly balanced with both teams playing
some good passing football. It was Calne who opened the scoring
after 21 minutes when
Ben Wickens latched onto a
Matt Fleming
through ball to score his fifth goal for his new club. Unfazed,
Bromham continued to play some neat football and were prevented an
equaliser when goalkeeper
Andy Windsor came quickly off his line to
deny striker Chris Burgess.
In the 29th minute Bromham’s Andy Davies got caught in possession on
the edge of his own box by Ben Wickens, who then crossed the ball
for Brett Cullen to head home from close range. This goal then
opened the flood the gates and Calne started scoring at will against
their shell-shocked hosts. Eagles’ captain
Stu Windsor scored his
fifth goal of the season to make it 3-0. Then Wickens and Cullen
both added another goal each to give Calne a totally unexpected 5-0
half-time lead.
Bromham composed them self during the break and thereafter showed
the level of form that had seen them achieve such an impressive
start to the season. However, despite having lots of good possession
they struggled to seriously test Andy Windsor in goal.
Bromham did give themselves some hope with 25 minutes left when
Chris Burgess fired home a powerful shot at the far post. But Calne
never looked like relinquishing such a commanding lead.
In the closing stages Bromham’s Lee Campbell headed the ball
into the net from close range, following a frantic goalmouth
scramble, to complete the 5-2 score line.
Calne Eagles 6-1 Westbury Town
KO Cup 1st Round - 30th October 2010
Second Division Calne Eagles overcame Third Division Westbury Town
6-1, although the score-line probably didn’t fairly reflect the
balance of play.
Westbury Town started the game in the ascendancy and certainly
looked capable of causing an upset as they pinned Calne back in the
first 10 minutes. However, Calne opened the scoring after 12 minutes
with their first significant attack of the game.
Ben Wickens
beat his marker before putting a dangerous cross into Westbury’s
penalty area from which a frantic goalmouth scramble ensued.
Finally, after hitting the post twice, Calne took the lead through
Sam Rogers, who notched up his first goal in adult football.
Moments later, after another swift counter-attack, Eagles’ Captain
Stu
Windsor doubled his side’s lead with a powerful run and finish.
Westbury continued to push forward and played some good passing
football. But in response, Calne continually exploited the space in
Westbury’s defence and carved out numerous clear-cut chances. Sam
Rogers scored his second of the game and Ben Wickens also got on the
score sheet to give Calne an unassailable 4-0 half-time lead.
Westbury fared much better in the second half and were probably the
better team. They were given a glimmer of hope after 57 minutes,
when centre-back
Gareth Cook
fouled his marker from a corner and Ryan Earney comfortably
dispatched the penalty kick. Then moments later, Calne’s goalkeeper
Andy Windsor
made a smart save from a Scott Walford shot to deny Westbury a
second goal.
In the last 15 minutes as Westbury Town tired, Calne Eagles added a
further two goals to their tally.
Brett Cullen
scored his first goal of the season and Stu Windsor scored his
second of the game after good inter-play from subs
Tom Cawley
and Alec Wells.
Calne Eagles 0-3 Trowbridge Wanderers Res
League Match 23rd October 2010
Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves moved up into second place with a well
deserved 3-0 win against Calne Eagles.
After a highly competitive first half, in which both teams had
cancelled each other out, the game was very evenly poised as the
players came out for the second half.
Trowbridge Wanderers’ Jamie moth opened the scoring only 2 minutes
later with a superb volley from a Ferris Lamrabet cross. Wanderers
then went on to control the game for an extended period and were
rewarded with a second goal, when Nigel Penelhum scored from a
rebound after goalkeeper Andy Windsor had done well to save an Andy
Fennell shot.
Calne Eagles then composed themselves and the play became more even.
With 20 minutes left, Eagles thought they had won a fortuitous
penalty when Shaun Jefferies went down under a tackle inside the
box. However, possibly realising his error, the referee decided to
award an indirect free kick from a tight angle rather than the
expected spot kick.
In the closing stages, Ferris Lamrabet scored his team’s third goal,
when he seized on some hesitant defending to tap in from close
range.
North Bradley 2-5 Calne Eagles
League Match - 16th October 2010
Calne Eagles picked up their second win of the season thanks largely
to a first half hat-trick from their recent signing
Ben Wickens.
North Bradley played a very attacking formation in the first half,
forcing Calne to defend deep in the in the early stages. However, it
was Calne who opened the scoring after only 13 minutes, when good
work from
Adam Moody set up Eagles’ captain
Stu Windsor, whose
deflected shot found the bottom corner of the goal.
North Bradley soon restored parity when their former goalkeeper, now
turned striker, Rob Elliott intercepted a long-ball up field. He
managed to get the better of Calne centre back
Roy Wenham, before
firing an unstoppable shot past
Andy Windsor in goal.
After 22 minutes, Ben Wickens scored the first of his three goals
when he seized on a defensive mistake and powered a low drive into
the bottom corner of the goal. His second came only five minute
later, courtesy of another heavy deflection off one of North
Bradley’s defenders. Wickens completed his hat-trick just before the
break, when he latched onto a good pass from Adam Moody to fire a
shot past Mark Binns.
The second half was a much tighter affair. North Bradley gave
themselves some hope when their livewire midfielder James Taylor
finished off a well-worked move to pull the score back to 4-2. They
could have made the game very interesting had it not been for an
exceptional goal-line clearance from
Kev Hamersley, after Dave
Strickland’s shot had beaten Andy Windsor in Calne’s goal.
In the last 10 minutes, Calne completed the scoring when an Adam
Moody corner was headed down by Brett Cullen to Kev Hamersley, who
managed to bundle the ball over line to make the points safe for his
team.
Calne Eagles 0-8 Melksham Town Reserves
League Match - 9th October 2010
Calne Eagles were given a footballing lesson by Melksham Reserves,
who secured a convincing 8-0 victory at Beversbrook. Melksham’s
superior skill was also matched equally by their sportsmanship, as
they showed total respect towards their battling opponents.
In open play, the first half was very even. Both teams only managed
to win one corner each and the best chance of the half actually fell
to Calne Eagles. Their striker
Bobby Randall beat Melksham’s offside
trap and went clean through on goal, but then unfortunately scuffed
his shot wide off the post.
In response, Melksham’s finishing was ruthlessly clinical. A superb
strike from James Eatough opened the scoring after 15 minutes and a
brace from Robert Manning saw Melksham go in at half-time with a 3-0
advantage.
Early in the second half, Robert Manning completed his hat-trick,
although Calne continued to battle and still played some good
football.
However, as the game progressed, Calne tired and could no longer
keep Melksham from dominating possession completely. Melksham
created chance after chance, and striker Robert Manning seemed to
find the back of the net with every shot. As a result, Melksham
effortlessly doubled their goal tally in the final 20 minutes.
Robert Manning completed a double hat-trick and Nathan Walker also
added to the scoring in the closing stages.
Byrons Wanderers 4-0 Calne Eagles
Wilts Jnr Cup - 2nd October 2010
Byrons Wanderers knocked Calne Eagles out of the Wilts Junior Cup
for the second successive year. However, this time around, they were
made to fight for their win, and although they probably deserved the
victory, the 4-0 score line flattered them somewhat.
The signs were ominous when Byrons took an early lead after only 8
minutes, when Jack Baversbrook ran from midfield and finished
emphatically from just inside the box. Calne Eagles kept their
composure and had a good chance to equalise when Steve Roberts fired
just wide, after being set up by Sam Rogers.
Wanderers missed a chance to double their lead shortly before half
time, when Gareth Cook was adjudged to have handled the ball inside
the penalty area. But Andy Windsor superbly saved Vincent
McCracken’s spot-kick.
In the second half, Byrons upped their game slightly and doubled
their lead after 63 minutes, when James Hamridge got in behind
Calne’s defence and slotted the ball past Andy Windsor in goal.
But Calne Eagles continued to battle and could have reduced the
deficit from the penalty spot, after Steve Roberts was hauled down
in the box. Unfortunately, Stu Windsor saw his scuffed spot-kick
saved by goalkeeper Martin Sharkey.
With three minutes left on the clock, a superb pass by Robert Gulley
sent sub Scott Grey clean through on goal to score his team’s third
goal. Then in the last minute, Dave Griffin headed home unchallenged
from a corner-kick to cement his team’s place in the next round.
Calne Eagles 1-2 Chippenham Old Boys
League Match - 25th March 2010
Chippenham Old Boys picked up their second win of the season against
luckless Calne Eagles, who were extremely unfortunate to come away
from the game empty handed.
The match was scheduled to go ahead without a League appointed
referee. However, the home team managed to secure the services of
qualified Level 7 referee Josh Dolman, who acquitted himself well in
his debut match at adult level.
Chippenham Old Boys started the game in the ascendancy and their
strike partnership of Marcus Young and Shane Bell had Calne
stretched on numerous occasions. But Calne settled into the game and
took the lead after 25 minutes when Stu Windsor prodded home from 6
yards out.
Just before half time Calne thought they had doubled their
advantage. Winger Bobby Randal broke FC Chippenham’s offside trap
and raced clean through on goal, before squaring the ball to Brett
Cullen who swept the ball home from 8 yards. Despite always
appearing to be behind the ball, Cullen was ruled offside.
Chippenham got themselves back into the game right at the start of
the second half when Paul Maddox made a great run from midfield and
scored with a clinical finish from 10 yards out. Shortly afterwards
an enforced Calne Eagles substitution saw Stu Windsor move back into
central midfield and this seemed to initiate their best spell of the
game.
Calne Eagles’ striker Shaun Jefferies was denied by Chippenham
goalkeeper Liam Bell. Brett Cullen then spooned a shot over the bar
when he was clean through on goal and Adam Moody saw a curling long
range shot just clear the upright.
However, it was Chippenham Old Boys who scored the winning goal in
somewhat fortuitous circumstances. With only 8 minutes left on the
clock, Calne’s goalkeeper Andy Windsor couldn’t keep hold of a
Marcus Young cross, which then bounced of the shoulder his team mate
Gary Wootten into the unguarded net.
Calne still continued to play some neat football in the remaining
minutes, but could not force the equaliser that their play had
deserved.
Castle Combe
6-0 Calne Eagles
League Match - 18th September 2010
Castle Combe notched up their first victory since winning the Third
Division title last season, with a resounding 6-0 home win against
Calne Eagles.
Matthew Hooper opened up the scoring for Combe with a superb
individual goal after 10 minutes. This was followed by a great team
move, which was finished off coolly by Matt White at the back post,
to score his first goal for the hosts.
Calne had their best chance of the match just before half-time when
Brett
Cullen headed
Tom Evans’
free-kick against the post.
Right at the start of the second half Combe scored a quick-fire
treble to put the result beyond doubt. However, all three goals owed
more to Calne’s nervous defending than Combe’s potency in front of
goal. Jamie Penton headed in at the far post after being up set-up
by Ben Pemberton. Their fourth came when Wesley Christian scored
with another header from a Matt Hooper cross. Ben Pemberton once
again turned provider for Castle Combe’s fifth, this time setting up
Matt Hooper to notch up his second goal of the match.
Calne steadied themselves thereafter and thought they may have done
enough to get through to the end of the match without any more
damage. However, with 5 minutes remaining sub Jason Cole hit an
unstoppable drive from the edge of the penalty area to take Combe’s
goal tally to six.
Calne Eagles 0-4 Bromham
League Match - 9th August 2010
Bromham overcame an exhausted Calne Eagles 4-0 to maintain their
100% percent record in the league.
However, the Trowbridge League’s decision to make some teams play
four games in eight days clearly handed Bromham a huge competitive
advantage. This is because they had been fortunate enough to have
only one mid-week match, whereas Calne had only 48 hours to recover
from a demanding game against Bratton on Tuesday evening.
Calne Eagles’ frustration has been heightened by the fact that the
Trowbridge League decided not to consult a single member club before
introducing this radical change of fixture policy. This gruelling
schedule would be considered unhealthy in the professional game, let
alone for amateur players holding down day jobs.
Despite their tiredness, it was Calne who started the brighter but
once Bromham won a penalty against the run of play after 20 minutes,
the game slowly turned into an easy result for Bromham, who had been
defeated by their opponents in pre-season
Bratton 3-1 Calne Eagles
League Match - 7th September 2010
Bratton claimed their first three points of the season against Calne
Eagles.
Bratton welcomed back striker Dan Cox from suspension and he got his
side off to a perfect start after only 3 minutes, when he got the
better of Calne’s centre back
Roy Wenham and angled a superb shot
into the bottom corner of Calne’s goal.
Bratton doubled their lead after 25 minutes, when Neil Gordon headed
home from a corner. Bratton then went on to dominate the rest of the
first half and Eagles were grateful to make it through to half time
only two goals down.
But the second half was a much more even affair. Bratton went 3-0 up
when Calne’s
Gareth Cook, under pressure from Ben Mead, put the ball
through his own net. But Calne scored the goal that their battling
display deserved, when sub
Richard Maslin scored his first goal for
the club with a sublime left-footed volley with 10 minutes to go.
Calne Eagles 3-2 Heytesbury
League Match - 4th September 2010
Calne Eagles opened the season with a really entertaining and
hard-fought 3-2 win against Heytesbury.
From the start, both teams set out to play attacking football. It
was Heytesbury that drew first blood after 25 minutes, when a long
ball up-field caught out Calne’s defence. Connor Thomas then went
clean through on goal and coolly slot his past
Andy Windsor
in goal.
Going behind gave the Eagles the extra spur they needed, and they
equalised just seven minutes later. Good work from
Matt Fleming
set up Adam
Moody, who scored with a sweet left-footed drive from just
inside the box. Calne then took the lead just before half time, when
Heytesbury’s goalkeeper Declan Griffiths could only parry a
Shaun
Jefferies shot into the path of
Steve
Roberts, who tapped in from close range.
In the 60th minute, Heytesbury equalised in slightly fortuitous
circumstances. An on-target, long-range effort from Sam Sweetman
deflected off Calne’s
Gareth Cook
and spun into the opposite side of the goal, leaving goalkeeper
Windsor totally stranded. However, Calne claimed all three points
when a Shaun Jefferies’ through-ball picked out Roberts, who kept
his composure to finish well from eight yards out.
Bromham 1-2
Calne Eagles
Friendly Match - 28th August
Calne Eagles completed their pre-season programme with a hard fought
2-1 win against an experienced Bromham side.
Bromham controlled large periods of the first half and they took a
deserved lead after 15 minutes when Jim Sandiford fired home an
unstoppable shot from 20 yards out. Bromham nearly doubled their
advantage 10 minutes later when a neat move saw Danny Powell cross
the ball to Jim Sandiford, who saw his shot bounce off the inside of
the Calne’s post and role agonisingly along the goal-line before
being cleared to safety by
Kev Hamersley.
However, despite being under constant pressure Calne defended
stoutly and just before half time they managed to equalise against
the run of play. Energetic striker
Shaun Jefferies got in behind
Bromham’s defence and although he didn’t make great contact with the
ball, his shot still managed to find the back of the net.
In the second half Bromham took the opportunity to experiment with
their line-up and this seemed to reduce their cutting edge in front
of goal. They still played some neat football but Calne started to
look for more comfortable and their extra pace in attacking
positions led to the game becoming a far more even affair.
Calne won the game with 10 minutes to go when good work from
Brett
Cullen set up his strike partner
Andy Stickley, who coolly slotted
the ball home from 8 yards out.
The Eagles’ have had a promising pre-season campaign, with good
competitive performances in all four matches. Hopefully if we can
maintain that same level of form going into this coming season we
can improve on last year’s tenth place finish.
Calne Eagles 1-3 Westwood Social
Friendly match – 21st August 2010
Fellow division two sides Calne Eagles and Westwood Social both gave
each other a really good workout during an entertaining and sporting
friendly at Beversbrook.
Westwood took the lead after 25 minutes when Calne's own linesman
was caught daydreaming and kept his flag down when Westwood’s Paul
Reynolds was clearly offside. Consequently, played continued and
Reynolds squared the ball across the goalmouth to Sam Simpson who
tapped the ball home from close range.
Reynolds then got on the score sheet himself only 90 seconds later
when he broke through on goal and angled a superb shot past Calne
goalkeeper
Kev Windsor.
Calne pulled a goal back before half time when good work from
Sam
Rogers set up
Brett Cullen, who drilled the ball home from just
inside the box.
Calne started the second half brightly and were unlucky not to
equalise when
Graham Stickley managed to squeeze a
Steve Robert’s
through ball past Westwood goalkeeper Martin Cowdrey, only to see
his shot rebound agonisingly off the post.
Indeed, Stickley’s pace and energy continued to cause Westwood
problems and the young striker was twice denied by Cowdrey when he
was clean through on goal. However, as the game wore on Westwood
started to dominate possession far more and it was only the agility
of veteran keeper
Kev Windsor that kept the score at 2-1.
In the closing stages, Westwood’s Danny Hurkitt picked up a loose
ball in midfield and fired a neat shot into the bottom corner of
Calne’s goal from just outside the box.

Calne Eagles 2-1 The Lamb
Friendly Match - 7th August 2010
Calne Eagles picked up their first victory of pre-season in a very
sporting and entertaining game against The Lamb.
Calne, who conceded an early penalty on Thursday evening, were lucky
not to concede in the first minute when Steve Knight dispossessed
Gary Wootten
on the edge of the box then beat two more defenders before firing
wide with only the keeper to beat.
Calne soon settled and had the better of the first half. Most of
their good attacking play centred around livewire attacker
Shaun
Jefferies, who caused The Lamb constant problems with his direct
play. However, despite forcing their opponents back and winning many
corners, Calne couldn’t find the breakthrough.
Indeed, the best save of the half came from Calne’s veteran keeper
Kev Windsor
who superbly tipped Dean Gumm’s 30 yard strike the over bar.
It was Calne who opened the scoring in the first minute of the
second half, when
Aaron
Hopkins latched onto a
Tom Evans
through ball and managed to squeeze his shot past The Lambs’
goalkeeper.
Despite this set back, The Lamb played much better in the second
half as they started to give Calne far more to worry about going
forward. Most notably through their pacy and skilful right-winger
Steve Knight who was making full use of the large pitch.
Calne doubled their lead with 10 minutes remaining when
Shaun
Jefferies headed home
Nick Cawley’s
left wing cross.
In the closing minutes, The Lamb got the consolation their play
deserved when centre back Damien Hateley headed home at the far post
from a corner kick.
Devizes Town
Under 18’s 2-0 Calne Eagles
Friendly Match - 5th August 2010
Calne Eagles began their pre-season friendly matches with a spirited
performance against Devizes Town Under 18’s.
Devizes were gifted the perfect start, when Calne centre-back
Gareth
Cook pushed Brad Whitbread in the box to concede a stonewall
penalty with only two minutes on the clock. The resulting spot-kick
was comfortably dispatched by Devizes’ centre forward Aaron Webb.
Devizes then went on to control large amounts of the possession
throughout the first half and consequently forced numerous corners
and free kicks, from which they produced two or three reasonable
half chances. However, Devizes got the reward that their dominance
deserved in rather odd circumstances just before half time. Josh
Scott’s tame effort from just outside the box got the better of
Calne’s reliable goalkeeper
Andy
Windsor, who had clearly lost the flight of the ball in falling
sunlight.
The second half turned out to be a much more even affair. Devizes
still had the lion share of the possession but Calne’s defence
became increasingly comfortably as the game progressed, and in open
play, it was only lively striker Aaron Webb who looked likely to
increase his side’s 2-0 score line.
In response, Calne Eagles worked tirelessly throughout and always
looked capable of grabbing a consolation goal. Their main striker
Stu
Windsor always looked dangerous, although probably the nearest
the Eagles’ got to scoring a goal came when their 16 year-old
substitute
Tom Cawley fired a shot just wide of the Devizes’ goal.
Change of home
ground
2nd August 2010
From the start of September the facilities at Priestley Grove
will be unavailable for 8/12 weeks. This is because the Youth Centre
has asbestos ceilings that are being removed, which will obviously
mean that we will have no access to the dressing rooms during this
period.
Therefore, we have secured the use of the facilities at Beversbrook
in Calne and this will become our new home for at least the
first two months of the season.
However, please note that this Saturday’s game and the following
Tuesday's game (7th & 17th Aug) will still
be played at Priestly Grove as normal. See
Fixtures for kick off times.

2009/10 Season
Westbury United 4-2 Calne Eagles
League Match - 22nd April 2010
Westbury United "A" continued their impressive form with a
routine win over Calne Eagles.
Steve Munday opened the scoring
for Westbury
after only 5 minutes . However, against the run play Calne
equalised when Roy Wenham's flick-on found Stu Windsor
unmarked at the back post to poke home his 21st goal of the
season.
Westbury continued to dominate the game and scored further goals
through Munday and Adrian Chantry to go in at half time 3-1 to
the good.
Despite their tough debut season in Division 2, Calne have
rarely lacked enthusiasm and although the result was never in
doubt, the second half was a much more competitive affair.
Chris Shorey added a fourth for Westbury with 10 minutes
remaining. However, Calne also got themselves a consolation,
when Simon Vowden scored the game's best goal with a scorching
25 yard drive.
Seend United Reserves 2-0 Calne Eagles
League Match - 13th April 2010
Seend maintained their slim hopes of finishing runners-up in
division 2 with a hard fought win against relegation threatened
Calne Eagles.
League positions made very little difference to the balance of play
throughout the entire match, with both teams defending well
throughout. Indeed, it took a freak goal to break the deadlock,
When a seemingly harmless cross into the box took a
unpredictable bounce, which totally wrong
footed Calne's Gary Wootten and fell fortuitously to Nick Groves
who made no mistake with a free shot from 8 yards out.
Despite their best efforts Calne could not fashion an equaliser.
Seend made sure of points in the last minute when Ben Howe
scored, following an indirect free kick in the box.
Calne Eagles 2-2 Westbury United "A"
League Match - 10th March 2010
Calne Eagles claimed a hard-fought draw against Westbury United
“A” with a late equaliser from their sub Brett Cullen.
Following their midweek capitulation against FC Northbridge,
when they conceded 4 late goals to lose 6-3, Calne started this
match in shaky form. Westbury dominated the early possession and
looked on course to extend their recent winning run.
However, totally against the run of play, Calne’s top scorer Stu
Windsor scored his 20th goal of the season, when he dispossessed
Westbury’s goalkeeper Nathan Taylor, leaving him with the
simplest of finishes. Westbury were soon on level terms after 25
minutes, when Calne defender Gary Wootten headed a teasing pass
into the penalty box past his own goalkeeper.
Despite this setback, Calne became far more composed and were
unlucky not to regain the lead when Tommy Ludford nearly scored
from 40 yards out. The big striker intercepted Nathan Taylor’s
poor clearance, but unfortunately saw his first-time shot bounce
agonisingly over the bar, with the goal totally unguarded.
Clearly unhappy with their first half performance, Westbury came
out in the second half determined to put things right. However,
Calne showed that their first-half display was no fluke as the
game continued to be very evenly balanced.
With 20 minutes remaining, Westbury took the lead for the first
time in the match, when defender Tom White scored his first goal
of the season by putting the finishing touch to a well-worked
team goal.
But Calne were not to be denied and with only 3 minutes
remaining, a right-wing cross from midfielder Vic Long was
superbly headed into the top corner of Westbury’s goal by Brett
Cullen.
FC
Northbridge 6-3 Calne Eagles
League Match - 8th April 2010
Calne Eagles dropped more points when they once again
surrendered a strong lead.
The Eagles' were leading 2-0 just before half time thanks to
goals from
Phil Gay and Tommy Ludford. However, Northbridge pulled one back
right on the stroke of half-time from David Bradbeer.
Liam Brown equalised at the start of the second half. But once
again the Calne went back in front through Stu Windsor.
Just as at the weekend, nerves got the better of Calne and they
capitulated in the last twenty minutes as Northbridge went on to
score four more goals to run comfortable winners. Mick Grieves,
Harry Hamlin, Steve Jackson and Andy Wilson all getting on the
score sheet for the Trowbridge side.
Calne Eagles 5-5 North Bradley AFC
League Match - 3rd April 2010
Calne Eagles and North Bradley shared a point apiece in their
manic Division 2 game at Priestley Grove.
Calne got off to a great start and raced into a 3-0 lead with a
goal from Stu Windsor and two from Tommy Ludford. North
Bradley’s James Taylor pulled a goal back from a corner, only
for Calne’s Tom Evans to restore his team’s three goal lead with
a long-range effort.
North Bradley’s fight back received a massive boost right at the
start of the second half, when Rob Clark raced on to a long ball
up field and scored with a fierce shot past Kevin Windsor in
Calne’s goal.
Despite this set back, Calne continued to create numerous good
chances. Tommy Ludford, Stu Windsor and Phil Gay all missed
opportunities to extend their team’s lead. However, North
Bradley got a crucial break when they were awarded a soft
penalty, which was duly converted by Bradley Witham.
In the torrential rain that followed, Calne’s composure in
possession suffered and North Bradley punished them heavily.
Chad Cain equalised for his team with 19 minutes remaining and
Rob Clark got his second of the match to give Bradley a 5-4
lead.
Calne got the game’s final goal when Stu Windsor converted from
the spot following another soft penalty award. In the very last
minute, North Bradley’s keeper Rob Elliott somehow tipped the
ball over the bar after his own defender Barry Newley had
inadvertently headed the ball towards his own goal.
Foresters
3-1 Calne Eagles
League Match - 27th March 2010
Foresters continued their unstoppable march to the Second
Division Title with a hard fought 3-1 win over battling Calne
Eagles.
Foresters showed their extra quality throughout the game and
took the lead after only 15 minutes, when Gavin Klukowski scored
with a clever back-heel. Paul Walker came close to doubling that
lead shortly before half time, when his rasping shot was tipped
over the bar by Eagles’ goalkeeper Andy Windsor.
In the second half, Foresters continued to dominate possession,
but Calne’s dogged defending kept them in with a chance of
getting something from the game. Then with 15 minutes remaining,
Foresters’ Owen Bryant scored with a superb shot from the edge
of the box into the bottom corner of the goal.
Five minutes later, they made the points secure when Gavin
Klukowski got his second, tapping in from close range following
a seemingly endless goalmouth scramble.
In the closing stages, Foresters had numerous chances to extend
their lead further, but a mixture of luck, good defending and
good goalkeeping kept the score at 3-0. With five minutes left,
Calne’s scored a well-deserved consolation goal, when Gary
Wootten’s clearance was picked up by Tommy Ludford, who set-up
Stu Windsor to coolly lob his shot over Alex Shaftoe in the
Foresters’ goal.
Calne Eagles 2-2 Chippenham Youth “A”
League Match – 6th March 2010
A last minute strike from Calne Eagles’ sub
Tommy Ludford rescued a point for his team and
also put an end to their recent losing run.
Calne were the better team throughout the first
half and deservedly took the lead after 16
minutes, when a superb pass from Simon Vowden
sent Phil Gay clean through on goal. The pacy
striker kept his cool and calmly slotted his
shot past Mat Smith in Chippenham’s goal.
Calne continued to play the better football but
struggled to turn their good possession into
chances. Then shortly before half time, somewhat
against the run of play, Chippenham equalised
when a Josh Hodges’ free kick was headed home by
Dan Clements from close range.
In the second half, the roles were reversed. FC
Chippenham improved their game greatly and
started to stretch Calne’s defence. Despite
this, it was Calne who came closest to scoring
the next goal, when Bobby Randal’s shot came
back off the post from close range.
FC Chippenham took the lead for the first time
in the 66th minute from another set piece, as
veteran striker John O’Meara powerfully headed
the ball home from a corner. FC Chippenham then
went on to dominate the closing stages of the
match, and it took some desperate last-ditch
defending and two superb saves from Eagles’
goalkeeper Kev Windsor to keep to Calne in the
game. This proved to be vital, as super-sub
Tommy Ludford showed good strength and composure
in the box to squeeze his shot past Mat Smith
and earn his team a share of the points.
Calne Eagles
0-2 Bratton
League Match - 27th February 2010
Bratton overcame Calne Eagles 2-0 in a hard
fought Division 2 encounter.
Bratton took the lead after 20 minutes, when a
cross from Ian Young was left by Eagles
centre-back Gary Wootten, totally wrong-footing
his keeper Kev Windsor, who could only watch
helplessly as the ball crossed the goal line. In
response, Calne showed some good attacking play,
with both Bobby Randal and Stu Windsor forcing
saves from Bratton keeper Luke Dalton.
In the second half, the game continued to be an
attacking affair. Calne thought they had
equalized, when a long distance shot from Bobby
Randal was diverted into the path of Stu
Windsor, who coolly slotted his shot past Luke
Dalton into the net. Despite the absence of a
flag, the referee decided to disallow the goal
and award a free-kick for offside.
Moments later, things appeared to be evened up
when Dan Cox appeared to be bundled over in the
Calne’s penalty area, but play was waved on.
However, Bratton put the result beyond doubt
with 15 minutes to go, when Sam Tucker hit a
powerful shot from distance though a crowded
box, leaving Kev Windsor no chance in Calne’s
goal.
Westwood Social 3-1 Calne Eagles
League Match - 20th March 2010
Westwood’s star striker Dan Thorne grabbed
himself a hat-trick to secure his team a league
double over Calne Eagles.
Westwood had initially come from behind, after
Eagles’ striker Tommy Ludford floated a sweet
shot from 20 yards out past goalkeeper Adam
Stevens. However, Westwood had only trailed for
five minutes when Thorne scored his first from
six yards out after the ball fell favourably for
him.
In the second half, Westwood started to control
the possession. They got their reward when
Thorne scored his second with a neat finish into
the top corner from just outside the box.
Westwood continued to look the most likely to
score with Eagles’ Keeper Kev Windsor making two
good saves to keep his team in the game.
Calne battled gallantly to find an equalising
goal, but with 13 minutes left, Dan Thorne
completed his hat-trick when he cleverly flicked
a Ben Cowdrey pass past Windsor in Calne’s goal.
Calne Eagles 2-3 Westwood Social
13th February 2010 – Division 2 Cup
Westwood booked their place in the semi-finals with
a 3-2 win over Calne Eagles. The game was a really
entertaining encounter, which in the end really
could have gone either way.
Despite playing some good football in the first 45
minutes, Calne’s recent defensive woes returned and
they gifted Westwood an early two-goal lead. After
only 10 minutes, a mix-up in Calne’s backline
presented prolific marksmen Dan Thorne with a simple
tap-in. Moments later, Dan Fricker scooped the ball
home from a corner to double his side’s lead.
In response, Calne created numerous good chances to
equalise. Their top scorer Stu Windsor was denied on
three occasions by Westwood keeper Adam Stevens.
However, defensively Calne continued to struggle and
were grateful to make it through to half-time having
only conceded the two goals.
In the second half, Calne mounted a gallant
comeback. They put Westwood under continuous
pressure and finally got their reward after 68
minutes, when Westwood goalkeeper Adam Stevens
handled a Tom Evans corner into his own net. Calne
continued to play the better football and equalised
with 10 minutes left, when a great cross from Nick
Cawley was fired home by Calne sub Tommy Ludford. In
the closing minutes of normal time, Calne’s Tom
Evans saw his shot come back off the post, into the
grateful hands of Adam Stevens.
Westwood regained their advantage right at the start
of extra time, when Dan Thorne struck again with a
superb run and finish. Calne pressed hard for an
equaliser, but as legs tired, chances came at a
premium. Westwood finally managed to see the game
through and secure their progression into the
semi-finals.
North Bradley 3-0 Calne Eagles
League Match – 6th February 2010
North Bradley claimed a hard fought 3-0 win against
familiar sparring partners Calne Eagles in this 2nd
Division clash at The Peace Memorial Ground.
Both teams’ play showed some good football throughout.
Calne Eagles looked the most likely to score early on,
when their livewire striker Stu Windsor was twice denied
by Bradley’s veteran keeper Mark Binns. North Bradley
nearly took the lead themselves when their top scorer
Pete Stephenson was denied on the goal line by Kev
Hamersley. Unfortunately, both players clashed heads in
the challenge, which resulted in Stephenson being forced
to leave the field with a nasty cut to his head.
North Bradley scored the opener after 20 minutes, as
Chadwick Cain forced the ball home following a
frenetic goal-mouth scramble. Within 10 minutes, they
had doubled their lead when Sub Rob Clarke‘s mishit
shot deceived Brett Cullen in Calne’s goal and spun just
inside the post.
In the second half, despite the score line, Calne Eagles
continued to play with a belief that they could get back
into the game. However, North Bradley put the result
beyond doubt with 30 minutes still to play, when a great
run and cross by James Taylor was headed home bravely by
Neil Maidment.
In the closing stages, the impressive Mark Binns made a
great save from Phil Gay, and Calne’s sub Tommy Ludford
put a rasping shot just over the bar. But by this stage
North Bradley had already secured the 3 points.
Heytesbury 5-2 Calne Eagles
League Match – 30th
January 2010
Heytesbury claimed a well deserved league victory against a
lacklustre Calne Eagles team.
The game was very open right from the start and both teams missed
numerous gilt-edged chances to take the lead early on. It was
Heytesbury who opened the scoring mid-way through the half when
James Harper headed home from a corner.
After the break, Calne’s usually stubborn defence could not
withstand the pressure that Heytesbury started to apply. Leigh
Kennedy doubled their lead when he dispossessed Eagles’ Captain Ian
Wilkinson on the edge of the box before finishing coolly. Then
centre-forward Paul Dredge gave his side an apparently unassailable
3-0 lead, when he smashed a superb volley past Roy Wenham in Calne’s
goal.
Calne Eagles’ prolific marksmen Stu Windsor scored a quick-fire
brace to drag his team back into the game with 20 minutes remaining.
However, Heytesbury secured a comfortable victory when Jason
Greatley and Kye Fennel scored two further goals, both from corners.
Calne Eagles 2-3 Castle
Combe
23 Jan - KO Cup Quarter-final
Striker Mark Sharratt scored a brace against his former club Calne
Eagles to fire Castle Combe into the semi-finals of the KO Cup.
The game was in doubt right up to the last minute, as Calne
desperately tried to clear a few small areas of surface water off
their pitch, with aid of garden forks and brooms. After consulting
with both managers, the referee decided to go ahead with the game.
This undoubtedly proved to be the right decision as both teams
served up an extremely sporting, wholehearted and above all
entertaining cup tie.
It was Calne Eagles who drew first blood after half an hour, when
Martin Riddell, under pressure from Calne’s Sam Rogers headed a Phil
Gay cross past his own goalkeeper.
Castle Combe started the second half in determined fashion and it
was only the aid of the woodwork and some inspired goalkeeping from
Calne’s Andy Windsor that kept the score at 1-0. However, the
pressure eventually told when Sharratt, who only transferred between
the two clubs in November, finished superbly from 15 yards out.
Calne Eagles responded well and retook the lead after 70 minutes
through Stu Windsor, who coolly lobbed Luke Jones in Castle Combe’s
goal, after latching onto a Rob Vowden through-ball. Combe this time
hit back within minutes. Mark Sharratt scored his second when he
pounced on a rebound following another good save from Windsor.
The game continued to go from end to end as defenders tired on the
heavy pitch. It was Castle Combe who emerged victorious, when Carl
Dawson squeezed the ball over the line following a goal mouth
scramble, with only 10 minutes remaining.
Calne Eagles passed the ball passed well in the closely stages, as
they pressed hard to force the goal that would take the game into
extra-time. Simon Vowden saw a rasping shot blocked by Mathew Hooper
and Stu Windsor also fired narrowly wide. But Castle Combe hung on
to claim their semi-final place.
Calne Eagles 1-2 FC
Northbridge
League – 16th January
A
superb second-half strike from Michael Grieve secured all 3 points
for FC Northbridge in their Second Division match against 10-man
Calne Eagles.
Due to the weather, both teams had been out of action for over a
month but it was Calne Eagles who appeared to be most rusty early
on. FC Northbridge dominated the opening minutes of the game with
Liam Brown hitting the woodwork after only two minutes. Shortly
after that scare, Will Browning and Kye Leather also saw shots
whistle just wide of Calne’s goal.
Calne soon got into their stride and the pace of their two strikers
Stu Windsor and Phil Gay soon had Northbridge stretched. It was this
pace that helped Calne open the scoring, when Windsor ran onto a Rob
Vowden through-ball and coolly finished past goalkeeper Luke Mayne.
Calne looked comfortable with their lead, but let FC Northbridge
back into the game when a looping a shot from Andy Wilson caught
goalkeeper Roy Wenham unawares, before dipping into the top corner
of the goal.
At
the start of the second half, Calne probably had the slightly better
chances and could have taken the lead when Phil Gay skillfully beat
two defenders before slicing his shot into the grateful hands of
Luke Mayne.
The game dynamic changed with 30 minutes remaining, when one of
Calne’s veteran players, Brett Cullen, received his first ever red
card (and the first for the club since March 08) for foul and
abusive language.
Consequently, FC Northbridge started to enjoy more possession and
managed to force more pressure on the home side. Calne still looked
dangerous on the counterattack, most notably through their teenage
wingers, Simon Notman and Sam Rogers, who both caused problems for
the Northbridge backline.
However, FC Northbridge scored the decisive goal with only 10
minutes left. Michael Grieve seized on a loose ball and with a
rasping shot from 25 yards out, scored a goal that was worthy of
winning such a tightly-contested game.
Calne Eagles 8-0
The Stiffs
League - 5th Dec
Calne Eagles emerged easy 8-0 winners in their Division 2 game
against The Stiffs.
Both teams had numerous players missing and were struggling to field
full squads. Calne Eagles were already missing 6 players, before
centre-back Gary Wootten and top scorer Stu Windsor pulled out at
short notice, through injury and flu respectively. This left them
naming veteran players Kev Windsor and Ron Hopkins on the bench for
the second time in three matches. However, their plight was nothing
compared to The Stiffs who had to battle out the entire game with
only 9 players.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Calne totally dominated possession from
start to finish. The away side showed plenty of resistance early on,
but once Brett Cullen had opened the scoring for Calne after 17
minutes with a well-taken header, the flood gates opened. Goals from
Alphie Archer, Vic Long, Rob Vowden (penalty) and two from Shaun
Jefferies gave Calne an unassailable 6-0 half-time lead.
The second half was once again all Calne Eagles', but they struggled
to create chances with the same ease as before. Nonetheless, Rob
Vowden scored his second and his team’s seventh after 58 minutes,
with a well-struck shot from just inside the box.
Calne finished the game with four players over 45 years old on the
pitch. It was oldest player of that quartet, 57 year old Ron
Hopkins, who finished off the scoring when he found the top corner
with a sweet shot from 20 yards out.
Calne Eagles
4-1 North Bradley
KO Cup Second Round – 28th November
Calne Eagles progressed into the quarter-final of the KO Cup with an
impressive win over fellow Division 2 side North Bradley.
Calne started the match at an extremely high tempo and as a result
totally dominated the first 45 minutes. They got the reward that
their play deserved after only 11 minutes when a superb cross from
new signing Sam Rogers set up Stu Windsor, who squeezed the ball
past Mark Binns in North Bradley’s goal at the second attempt.
The pace and the energy of Windsor and his strike partner Shaun
Jefferies continued to stretch North Bradley’s defence. Midway
through the half, Windsor added his second of the game, and his
tenth of the season, when he went clean through on goal and coolly
rounded Binns before tapping into the empty net. Calne all but
wrapped up the game before half-time, when Shaun Jefferies was
brought down in the box and Stu Windsor converted the penalty to
complete his hat-trick.
Calne started the second-half in much the same fashion, with Mark
Binns making numerous good saves from both Windsor and Jefferies to
keep the score at 3-0. However, on the hour mark, Jefferies did
finally get on the score-sheet. His initial shot was once again well
saved by Binns’ but the ball span up favourably for the striker to
head home from close range.
In the last 30 minutes, North Bradley started to play some good
football and had Calne fully stretched on numerous occasions, with
striker Craig Brown at the centre of most of their good attacking
play. With 17 minutes remaining, they got their reward when a
free-kick from Neil Maidment was not cleared by Calne and the ball
broke kindly to Rob Clark, who made no mistake from 10 yards out. In
the closing stages, Eagles’ sub Alphie Archer missed two good
chances to extend Calne’s lead. But by this point Calne’s place in
the next round was already safe.
FC
Chippenham Youth “A” 2-1 Calne Eagles
League – 21st November
FC Chippenham Youth “A” claimed their first home win of the season against Calne Eagles in heavy wind and rain at Stanley Park.
Calne played into the wind in the first half and FC Chippenham took
the lead after only 9 minutes, when Kelvin Page struck an unstoppable shot from distance right into the top corner of the net. They could have extended their lead after 15 minutes, when Eagles keeper Andy Windsor saved Mick Austin’s shot and Matt Spear hit the post from the rebound.
Despite being forced deep, Calne always looked dangerous on the counter with Shaun Jefferies and Phil Gay both missing good chances to equalise during the first half. However, just before half-time Calne, who were already threadbare, were dealt a blow when pacey striker Phil Gay pulled his hamstring and had to go off. With no other regular players on the bench, 57 year old Ron
Hopkins gallantly stepped into the breach.
Despite this, Calne started the half in positive mood and forced
numerous early corners. But they were left with a mountain to climb
when a speculative long range effort from Tom Porter
looped off the foot of Calne’s Kevin Hamersley, leaving his goalkeeper Andy Windsor stranded.
Calne pulled themselves back into the game, when another one of their veterans, 45-year old Nick Cawley, went clean through on goal and beat goalkeeper Mat Smith with a coolly taken finish. Moments later, Cawley had a good chance to equalise when he glanced his header just wide of the post. Calne’s Stu Windsor also saw a rasping 30 yard shot clip the post.
FC Chippenham always looked dangerous on the break and both Mick Austin and Matt Spear missed opportunities to put the game beyond doubt. Spear also had a goal ruled offside. However, in the end, this was of little consequence as they held on to claim all three points.
Calne Eagles 2-7 Foresters
League – 7th November
Second division pacesetters The Foresters scored five goals in the last half hour of an energetic game, to see off battling Calne Eagles at Priestly Grove.
Foresters totally dominated the early exchanges and got their reward after only 7 minutes, when good work from Gavin Klukowski set-up Graham Griffiths to open the scoring from close range. Foresters continued to dominate and forced numerous good saves out of Eagles goalkeeper Roy Wenham.
Totally against the run of play, Calne equalised after 22 minutes, when striker Stu Windsor outpaced the Foresters’ defence and coolly slotted his shot past Alex Shaftoe in the Foresters' goal. This gave Calne a boost and they started to gain a bit more composure in possession. However, the Foresters still looked dangerous and just before half-time Griffiths scored his second with a superb shot into the top corner of the net.
Foresters continued to control the game in the second half. However, their gung-ho style was once again exploited by Stu Windsor’s pace, when his pressure led to a horrible mix-up between Shaftoe and centre-back Wayne Bailey, which left the young striker with a simple tap-in.
The Forester’s restored their lead on the hour, when the outstanding Luke Turvey broke from midfield and lobbed a delicate shot over the stranded Roy Wenham. Calne still battled hard and both Simon Notman and Stu Windsor had chances to once again restore parity. But when Gavin Klukowski put his side 4-2 up with 20 minutes left, Calne's resistance faded.
In the closing stages, The Foresters continued to pass the ball with pace and accuracy and added a further three goals. Gavin Klukowski scored his second when he went clean through on goal. Terry Sheppard also got on the score sheet and with almost the last kick of the game, Roy Wenham let a Kane Udeh cross slip under his body and into the open net.
Westbury United 'A' 2-0 (aet) Calne Eagles
A&B Cup, 1st Round – 31st October
Westbury United secured a place in the second round of The A&B Cup, courtesy of two superbly taken goals deep into extra-time against fellow Division 2 side Calne Eagles.
With both teams coming off the back of consecutive clean-sheets in their recent league matches, it became very clear early on that this was going to be a closely contested match.
Westbury came nearest to opening the scoring in the first half, when a superb turn and shot from striker Dave Castle rebounded off Calne’s post and was cleared to safety by Gary Wootten. Westbury also hit the woodwork twice more, following goal-mouth scrambles. At the other end, Simon Vowden had a great chance when he ran from deep, but his shot was fired straight at goalkeeper Nathan Taylor.
In the second half, Westbury continued to have more of the possession but found chances very hard to come by, as they failed to really test Calne’s stand-in keeper Roy Wenham. Then in the last few seconds of normal time, Eagles appeared to be very unlucky not to be awarded a penalty, when Gary Wootten was bundled over in the penalty area.
In extra time, even as legs tired, the stalemate continued and it became obvious that it would probably take a goal of quality to stop the game going to a penalty shoot-out. This quality was provided by Westbury’s Adrian Chantrey, who showed great technique to volley home an unstoppable strike into the top corner of the goal, with only 10 minutes of extra time remaining.
However, Calne showed great fighting spirit and put Westbury under a lot of pressure in the closing stages. A good pass from Simon Notman sent fellow sub Bobby Randal clean through on goal. But after a great first touch, Randal couldn’t direct his shot on target.
Then with only two minutes to go, Stu Windsor also went clean through on goal and coolly slotted his shot past Taylor in Westbury’s goal. Despite there being no flag, the referee decided to consult Westbury’s club official. There was then what appeared to be a bizarre verbal confrontation between the two of them, which resulted in the assistant referee being shown a red card and the goal being disallowed!
In the last minute, as Calne desperately sought an equaliser, Westbury’s Chris Storey took full advantage of the space afforded to him inside the box, when he struck a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the net to send his team into the next round.
The Stiffs 0-5 Calne Eagles
League Match – 24th October
After a slow start to their campaign, Calne Eagles gained a second consecutive league win against bottom-placed side The Stiffs.
Calne dominated the possession throughout the match. They took the lead after 14 minutes, when Phil Gay poked the ball home from six yards out. They then doubled their lead soon after, when central midfielder Stu Windsor scored for the fourth consecutive match. Windsor then doubled his tally before half time when he forced a shot through the crowded penalty-box and past Andy Barlow in goal.
After the break, The Stiffs resorted to defending on the edge of their penalty, and despite long periods of possession and countless shots on goal, Calne struggled to add to their advantage.
With 20 minutes to go, The Stiffs had a five-minute period where they created three good chances to pull themselves back into the game. First, Matt Alland’s far-post cross had Eagles keeper Andy Windsor beaten before it was headed off the line by their centre-back Roy Wenham. Then Tom Evans cleared another Stiffs shot off the line from the resulting corner, this time denying Chris Benton. Moments later, Brian Holt fired a shot into the side netting, after he had managed to get in behind Calne’s backline.
In the closing stages, Calne reasserted themselves. With 10 minutes left, Stu Windsor, who had by now been moved up front, scored again to complete his hat-trick. Then in the final few minutes, Gareth Cook completed the scoring when he grabbed his first goal for the Eagles with a six yard screamer.
Westwood
Social 1-3 Calne Eagles
KO Cup, 1st Round – 17th October
This Division 2 clash in the KO Cup saw Calne Eagles gain a 3-1 win
over Westwood Social. This was the fourth time the teams had played
each other in little over a year and as with all the other
encounters there was little to choose between the sides.
The first half was really evenly contested with both teams intent on
playing attacking football. Calne took the lead after 20 minutes,
when Westwood’s Adam Stephens was penalised for hand-ball inside the
box. Westwood’s goalkeeper Martin Cowdrey got a hand to Stu
Windsor’s penalty but could not stop the ball from hitting the back
of the net.
Westwood were prevented from equalising soon after, when Ben Cowdrey
raced clean through on goal but saw his shot well-saved by Eagles’
keeper Andy Windsor. At the other end, Brett Cullen saw his strong
header tipped round the post by Cowdrey.
Calne doubled their lead after 50 minutes, when Phil Gay beat Martin
Cowdrey with a sweet strike from 20 yards out. Ten minutes later
Brett Cullen secured Calne’s place in the second round when he
rifled home an unstoppable shot from 15 yards out.
Westwood, however, continued to press and prolific striker Dan
Thorne was unlucky when he saw a sweet shot curl just wide of the
post. Andy Windsor also made another impressive save, once again
denying skilful striker Ben Cowdrey with a superb reaction save.
With 20 minutes left, Dan Thorne gave his side some hope with a
superb individual goal. But Calne shut up shop in the closing stages
and never looked like surrendering their place in the next round.
Byrons
Wanderers 6-1 Calne Eagles
Wilts Jnr Cup, 1st Round – 3rd October
Wiltshire League side Byrons Wanderers comfortably progressed into
the second round of the Wilts Jnr Cup, at the expense of Trowbridge
League side Calne Eagles
Despite having the lion's share of the possession in the first 20
minutes, Byrons Wanderers struggled to create any real clear-cut
chances early on. In response, Calne looked dangerous on the
counter-attack, most notably through attacking midfielder Stu
Windsor, who caused problems with numerous impressive breaks from
deep.
However, Byrons opened the scoring after 20 minutes, when a teasing
cross from Steven Gray was turned into his own net by Eagles’
centre-back Roy Wenham. This goal seemed to open the floodgates, as
Calne lost their defensive shape and Byrons took total control of
the game. Striker Johan Sutton went on to score a quick fire
hat-trick, as Calne were run ragged before the interval.
At 4-0 down, Calne returned for the second half and started to play
to their true potential. As a result, the game became much more even
and hard fought, with both teams playing a lot of good passing
football. Wanderers’ previously impenetrable defence started to get
stretched and the impressive Stu Windsor pulled a goal back for his
team after 65 minutes, when he ran from deep and neatly beat
goalkeeper Warren Jackson. However, shortly after the goal Calne
lost energetic midfielders Tom Evans and Andy Stickley through
injury and this seemed to knock their play slightly.
With 10 minutes to go, Byrons started to dominate the game again and
they scored two more goals, one from Niall Harrigan and a fourth for
Johan Sutton.
Calne Eagles
4-0 Heytesbury
League match – 26th September
Calne Eagles picked up their first points of the season with a 4-0
home victory over Heytesbury.
Calne, who had conceded an early goal in each of their previous
three matches, had the best possible start when, inside five
minutes, 16yr old striker Simon Notman headed home a Simon Vowden
corner. Moments later, Notman repeated the trick, this time from a
Gary Wootten corner, with the final touch coming off the tall
striker’s shoulder.
Heytesbury composed themselves following their shaky start and came
much more into the game during the remainder of the half, with their
midfielder playmakers Ore Francis and Chris Baker both seeing plenty
of the ball. It took a great save from Calne keeper Andy Windsor to
keep out Baker’s rasping drive mid-way through the half. In
response, Calne also continued to create chances of their own, with
both Mark Sharratt and Simon Notman both missing opportunities to
extend their side’s lead.
During half-time, entertainment was provided unwittingly by referee
Olly Ballinger, who had to scale a garden fence to retrieve the
match ball after some sneaky shooting practice went somewhat awry!
Calne Eagles slightly edged the second half and but for some
wasteful finishing should have wrapped the game up much sooner than
they did. However, the result was put beyond doubt in the last five
minutes, when another of Calne’s 16yr old players Stu Windsor weaved
his way through Heytesbury’s defence to put his side 3-0 up. Calne
sub Phil Gay then completed the scoring with the final move of the
game when he ran clean through on goal and coolly slotted his shot
past Heytesbury goalkeeper Nik Bungay.
Calne Eagles 5-1 Seend United Reserves
League match – 19th September
A very strong Seend Reserve side claimed a 4-1 win over Calne Eagles
in a sporting encounter at Priestley Grove.
Seend took control of the game after only 5 minutes when Dan Moore
put them in front from a corner. Jordan Evans then extended their
lead 10 minutes later when his teasing cross eluded goalkeeper Roy
Wenham and crept in at the far post.
In response, Calne played some good football but could not match
their opponents' cutting edge in front of goal. This was further
highlighted when Dan Moore clinically finished off a sweeping
counter-attack to give his team a comfortable 3-0 half-time lead.
After the break, Calne upped their game dramatically and started to
put Seend under far more pressure. They came close to the early goal
that they needed, when a superb save from Richard Hemings denied
16yr old midfielder Simon Notman. Calne continued to press and Seend
rode their luck when a miss-hit cross from Calne’s Kev Hamersley
rebounded off the far post back into the grateful hands of Hemings.
At the other end, Seend continued to look dangerous with Dan Moore
and Adam Potter both missing good opportunities to put the result
well and truly beyond doubt. However, it was Calne who scored the
next, when on 65 minutes, Mark Sharratt raced through on goal and
coolly rounded the goalkeeper to score his first goal for the club.
Calne pressed hard to force a second goal, which left them exposed
at the other end and Jordon Evans took full advantage when he
confidently struck home the game’s final goal with 10 minutes
remaining.
Bratton 5-1 Calne
Eagles
League match – 12th September
Bratton claimed their first league win of the season in
comprehensive style with a 5-1 at home against newly-promoted Calne
Eagles.
Bratton got off to a perfect start after only five minutes when
Calne’s entire defence failed to play to the whistle, thinking that
the ball had gone out for a corner kick. Bratton took full advantage
and Ian Young scored with a simple tap-in. Within 10 minutes,
Bratton had doubled their lead when Dan Cox raced clean
through on goal and confidently slotted his shot past Roy Wenham in Calne’s goal. Bratton all but wrapped the game up after only 20
minutes when Andy Simms‘ tame shot through a crowded penalty
box was deflected past Wenham by one of his own defenders.
Calne Eagles recovered their composure and showed plenty of spirit
after their shaky start and they competed much better for the
remainder of the game. They even gave themselves hope of a comeback
early in the second half, when prolific winger Shaun Jefferies
capitalised on a mistake by Bratton goalkeeper Sean Harvey to pull
one goal back for his team. However, only moments later, Bratton
regained their 3 goal lead when Andy Simms finished off a
fast flowing counter attack.
Bratton were reduced to 10 men with 25 minutes left, when one of
their one of their defenders was sent off for fouling Shaun
Jefferies when he was clean through on goal. Calne’s Simon Vowden
hit the subsequent free kick well over the bar, but Vowden showed
rather more accuracy soon after when he saw a well-struck free kick
from further out come back off the crossbar.
With two minutes remaining, Bratton capped off their fine
performance when Shane Newman put the final touch to a fine
passing move to complete the 5-1 score line
Calne
Eagles 0-1 Westwood Social
League match – 5th September
Two of the teams promoted from the 3rd Division, Calne Eagles
and Westwood Social, took on each other in a very close-fought
and sporting encounter at Priestley Grove in Calne.
Westwood started the much brighter of the two teams and their
strike partnership of Dan Thorne and Ben Cowdrey had Calne fully
stretched in the early stages of the game. The pressure finally
told after only 12 minutes, when prolific striker Thorne
finished well from 15 yards out.
Westwood continued to dominate during the rest of the first
half, with Thorne, Cowdrey and skilful winger Duncan Frew all
seeing further good efforts blocked. Adam Stephens also saw his
deflected long-range shot tipped over the bar by Calne
goalkeeper Roy Wenham.
In the second half, Calne composed themselves defensively and as
a result the game became a bit of stalemate, with both teams
initially struggling to create any good goal-scoring
opportunities.
With 25 minutes remaining, Calne brought on subs Rob Randal and
Simon Notman and these changes seemed to kick-start their
attacking play. Thereafter, Calne started passing the ball with
more fluency and created numerous good chances to equalise.
Westwood goalkeeper Martin Cowdrey saved well from both Brett
Cullen and Simon Notman, who was also unlucky when he had a good
effort come back off the post.
However, Westwood showed a lot of resolve and hung on to claim
their first 3 points of the season.
Pre-season Friendlies
Trowbridge Wanderers 9-1 Calne Eagles
Friendly - 8th August
Calne Eagles kicked off their pre-season friendlies against 1st
Division side Trowbridge Wanderers, who will almost certainly be
challenging for trophies during the coming season.
The Wanderers dominated possession from start to finish, however, it
took 20 minutes for them to break the deadlock, when they scored
with a free header from a corner kick. In response, Eagles battled
hard and were unlucky not to equalise when Shaun Jefferies ran clean
though on goal and saw his shot bounce off the post, with new
signing Rob Randal narrowly missing the rebound.
Trowbridge doubled their lead 10 minutes before half time, when
goalkeeper Andy Windsor and defender Roy Wenham both left each other
to deal with a teasing cross, which then crept in at the far post.
Then, right on the stroke of half time, Gareth Cook was also unlucky
when he deflected a long-range shot past his own goalkeeper.
Wanderers started the second half in rampant mood and scored 4 goals
inside the first 15 minutes. Calne rallied mid-way through the half
and scored a consolation goal when great work by Shaun Jefferies on
the left wing set up veteran Striker Nick Cawley, who finished well
from just inside the box. They were also awarded a penalty only
moments later but Steve Roberts saw his well struck spot-kick
rebound off the post and away to safety.
In the closing stages, as Calne ran out of steam, Trowbridge
attacked almost at will and scored a further 2 goals, to finish off
the game as 9-1 winners.
Despite the score line, the Eagles battled well throughout and
showed plenty of the spirit that served them so well during last
season’s campaign.
Steeple Ashton 3-2 Calne Eagles
Friendly - 15 August
Calne Eagles played their annual pre-season friendly against Steeple
Ashton and as usual they gave their 1st division hosts a really
competitive game.
Steeple Ashton started the brighter of the two teams and controlled
possession in the first 20 minutes. However, despite their pressure,
Ashton struggled to test stand-in goalkeeper Roy Wenham. This was
largely due to some great defending from Calne’s wholehearted
centre-back Gareth Cook, who made numerous last-ditch tackles.
Totally against the run of play, it was Calne who opened the
scoring, when a totally miss-hit shot from Steve Roberts fell kindly
to prolific goal scorer Shaun Jefferies, who made no mistake from
six yards out.
Steeple Ashton were back on level terms only moments later, when
Nathan Holloway’s shot went through a crowd of players and found the
bottom corner of the goal. Then on 30 minutes, Ashton took the lead
when Steve Coveney beat goalkeeper Roy Wenham to a loose ball, which
then ricocheted off both players before rolling into the open net.
Despite conceding the two goals, Calne started to play some better
football and the game started to become a far more even affair. Just
before half time Shaun Jefferies nearly levelled the score when he
saw a good effort rebound off the post.
Early in the second half, Calne’s Roy Wenham made two good saves to
keep his team in the game and make up for his earlier mistake.
However, Steeple Ashton did finally extend their lead, when former
Trowbridge Town player Guy Rowley punished some hesitant defending
from Calne and clinically fired home from 10 yards out.
Calne finished off the game by playing some good passing football
and pulled back a goal with 12 minutes left when Brett Cullen headed
home a Tom Evans corner. They also had a good shout for a penalty
turned down, when Shaun Jefferies went down under a challenge inside
Steeple Ashton’s penalty box.
Overall, it was a very good workout for the Eagles, who played some
encouraging football and certainly seem to have got last week’s
heavy defeat out of their system.
Calne Eagles
1-7 Foresters FC
Friendly match - 22 August
Calne Eagles played another extremely tough pre-season friendly
against last season’s Division 3 Champions Foresters FC. Despite
losing 7-1, the Eagles still showed plenty of good play and it was
only in last 20 minutes that the Foresters completely dominated,
scoring 5 of their 7 goals during that period.
Eagles’ manager Roy Wenham freely admitted that the Foresters' late
flurry of goals had much to do with his chopping and changing
players around the pitch in order to give all 5 of the team’s
substitutes a good run-out. However, that did not take away from the
fact The Foresters did play a lot of impressive football throughout
the entire game.
It was Calne who took the lead in the opening minutes, when new
signing Tommy Ludford coolly finished off a good move, that he
started himself, with a really good through-ball to striker Tom
Evans. The Foresters had to wait 20 minutes for their equaliser to
come, when Graham Griffiths finished neatly following a good passing
move. In response, Calne played some good passing football in the
first half and fully deserved to go in at the break with scores at
1-1.
In the second half, the Foresters gradually started to take control
of the game, but it took a mistake by Roy Wenham in Calne’s goal to
gift them the lead, when he allowed a shot from skilful midfielder
Luke Turvey to squirm through his legs just before the hour mark.
Despite the setback, Calne continued to show plenty of resilience.
However, when Graham Griffiths scored his second goal of the match,
the floodgates opened and The Foresters went on to show some
clinical form in the closing stages. Luke Turvey scored the fourth
goal, with Edwin Escott, Kane Udeh and player-manager Patrick
Johnson also getting on score sheet.
Calne Eagles 0-1 Trowbridge Wanderers
Res
Friendly match - 29 August
Calne Eagles went down 1-0 in their last pre-season friendly, in what was a very competitive and evenly fought encounter.
Trowbridge started the sharper of the two teams and made Calne pay after only 10 minutes, when Josh Ferguson stole a yard on his marker and finished superbly from just inside the box. Calne composed themselves thereafter and started to compete well all across the pitch. So they were unlucky not to equalise after 20 minutes when a superb long distance shot from impressive winger Andy Stickley cannoned back off the post with the goalkeeper well-beaten. Shortly after that, striker Tom Evans beat Wanderers’ offside trap but scooped his shot well wide of the goal.
The second half was equally well balanced, with Calne creating numerous good chances to equalise. However, on the counter-attack, Wanderers looked every bit as dangerous with all their best play coming from star striker Josh Ferguson, who was denied on three occasions by Eagles’ goalkeeper Roy Wenham.
Calne continued to press right to end of the match and created numerous half chances but Trowbridge defended well and hung on for the win.
