2009/10 Season
Westbury United 4-2 Calne Eagles
League Match - 22nd April 2010
Westbury United "A" continued their impressive form with a
routine win over Calne Eagles.
Steve Munday opened the scoring
for Westbury
after only 5 minutes . However, against the run play Calne
equalised when Roy Wenham's flick-on found Stu Windsor
unmarked at the back post to poke home his 21st goal of the
season.
Westbury continued to dominate the game and scored further goals
through Munday and Adrian Chantry to go in at half time 3-1 to
the good.
Despite their tough debut season in Division 2, Calne have
rarely lacked enthusiasm and although the result was never in
doubt, the second half was a much more competitive affair.
Chris Shorey added a fourth for Westbury with 10 minutes
remaining. However, Calne also got themselves a consolation,
when Simon Vowden scored the game's best goal with a scorching
25 yard drive.
Seend United Reserves 2-0 Calne Eagles
League Match - 13th April 2010
Seend maintained their slim hopes of finishing runners-up in
division 2 with a hard fought win against relegation threatened
Calne Eagles.
League positions made very little difference to the balance of play
throughout the entire match, with both teams defending well
throughout. Indeed, it took a freak goal to break the deadlock,
When a seemingly harmless cross into the box took a
unpredictable bounce, which totally wrong
footed Calne's Gary Wootten and fell fortuitously to Nick Groves
who made no mistake with a free shot from 8 yards out.
Despite their best efforts Calne could not fashion an equaliser.
Seend made sure of points in the last minute when Ben Howe
scored, following an indirect free kick in the box.
Calne Eagles 2-2 Westbury United "A"
League Match - 10th March 2010
Calne Eagles claimed a hard-fought draw against Westbury United
“A” with a late equaliser from their sub Brett Cullen.
Following their midweek capitulation against FC Northbridge,
when they conceded 4 late goals to lose 6-3, Calne started this
match in shaky form. Westbury dominated the early possession and
looked on course to extend their recent winning run.
However, totally against the run of play, Calne’s top scorer Stu
Windsor scored his 20th goal of the season, when he dispossessed
Westbury’s goalkeeper Nathan Taylor, leaving him with the
simplest of finishes. Westbury were soon on level terms after 25
minutes, when Calne defender Gary Wootten headed a teasing pass
into the penalty box past his own goalkeeper.
Despite this setback, Calne became far more composed and were
unlucky not to regain the lead when Tommy Ludford nearly scored
from 40 yards out. The big striker intercepted Nathan Taylor’s
poor clearance, but unfortunately saw his first-time shot bounce
agonisingly over the bar, with the goal totally unguarded.
Clearly unhappy with their first half performance, Westbury came
out in the second half determined to put things right. However,
Calne showed that their first-half display was no fluke as the
game continued to be very evenly balanced.
With 20 minutes remaining, Westbury took the lead for the first
time in the match, when defender Tom White scored his first goal
of the season by putting the finishing touch to a well-worked
team goal.
But Calne were not to be denied and with only 3 minutes
remaining, a right-wing cross from midfielder Vic Long was
superbly headed into the top corner of Westbury’s goal by Brett
Cullen.
FC
Northbridge 6-3 Calne Eagles
League Match - 8th April 2010
Calne Eagles dropped more points when they once again
surrendered a strong lead.
The Eagles' were leading 2-0 just before half time thanks to
goals from
Phil Gay and Tommy Ludford. However, Northbridge pulled one back
right on the stroke of half-time from David Bradbeer.
Liam Brown equalised at the start of the second half. But once
again the Calne went back in front through Stu Windsor.
Just as at the weekend, nerves got the better of Calne and they
capitulated in the last twenty minutes as Northbridge went on to
score four more goals to run comfortable winners. Mick Grieves,
Harry Hamlin, Steve Jackson and Andy Wilson all getting on the
score sheet for the Trowbridge side.
Calne Eagles 5-5 North Bradley AFC
League Match - 3rd April 2010
Calne Eagles and North Bradley shared a point apiece in their
manic Division 2 game at Priestley Grove.
Calne got off to a great start and raced into a 3-0 lead with a
goal from Stu Windsor and two from Tommy Ludford. North
Bradley’s James Taylor pulled a goal back from a corner, only
for Calne’s Tom Evans to restore his team’s three goal lead with
a long-range effort.
North Bradley’s fight back received a massive boost right at the
start of the second half, when Rob Clark raced on to a long ball
up field and scored with a fierce shot past Kevin Windsor in
Calne’s goal.
Despite this set back, Calne continued to create numerous good
chances. Tommy Ludford, Stu Windsor and Phil Gay all missed
opportunities to extend their team’s lead. However, North
Bradley got a crucial break when they were awarded a soft
penalty, which was duly converted by Bradley Witham.
In the torrential rain that followed, Calne’s composure in
possession suffered and North Bradley punished them heavily.
Chad Cain equalised for his team with 19 minutes remaining and
Rob Clark got his second of the match to give Bradley a 5-4
lead.
Calne got the game’s final goal when Stu Windsor converted from
the spot following another soft penalty award. In the very last
minute, North Bradley’s keeper Rob Elliott somehow tipped the
ball over the bar after his own defender Barry Newley had
inadvertently headed the ball towards his own goal.
Foresters
3-1 Calne Eagles
League Match - 27th March 2010
Foresters continued their unstoppable march to the Second
Division Title with a hard fought 3-1 win over battling Calne
Eagles.
Foresters showed their extra quality throughout the game and
took the lead after only 15 minutes, when Gavin Klukowski scored
with a clever back-heel. Paul Walker came close to doubling that
lead shortly before half time, when his rasping shot was tipped
over the bar by Eagles’ goalkeeper Andy Windsor.
In the second half, Foresters continued to dominate possession,
but Calne’s dogged defending kept them in with a chance of
getting something from the game. Then with 15 minutes remaining,
Foresters’ Owen Bryant scored with a superb shot from the edge
of the box into the bottom corner of the goal.
Five minutes later, they made the points secure when Gavin
Klukowski got his second, tapping in from close range following
a seemingly endless goalmouth scramble.
In the closing stages, Foresters had numerous chances to extend
their lead further, but a mixture of luck, good defending and
good goalkeeping kept the score at 3-0. With five minutes left,
Calne’s scored a well-deserved consolation goal, when Gary
Wootten’s clearance was picked up by Tommy Ludford, who set-up
Stu Windsor to coolly lob his shot over Alex Shaftoe in the
Foresters’ goal.
Calne Eagles 2-2 Chippenham Youth “A”
League Match – 6th March 2010
A last minute strike from Calne Eagles’ sub
Tommy Ludford rescued a point for his team and
also put an end to their recent losing run.
Calne were the better team throughout the first
half and deservedly took the lead after 16
minutes, when a superb pass from Simon Vowden
sent Phil Gay clean through on goal. The pacy
striker kept his cool and calmly slotted his
shot past Mat Smith in Chippenham’s goal.
Calne continued to play the better football but
struggled to turn their good possession into
chances. Then shortly before half time, somewhat
against the run of play, Chippenham equalised
when a Josh Hodges’ free kick was headed home by
Dan Clements from close range.
In the second half, the roles were reversed. FC
Chippenham improved their game greatly and
started to stretch Calne’s defence. Despite
this, it was Calne who came closest to scoring
the next goal, when Bobby Randal’s shot came
back off the post from close range.
FC Chippenham took the lead for the first time
in the 66th minute from another set piece, as
veteran striker John O’Meara powerfully headed
the ball home from a corner. FC Chippenham then
went on to dominate the closing stages of the
match, and it took some desperate last-ditch
defending and two superb saves from Eagles’
goalkeeper Kev Windsor to keep to Calne in the
game. This proved to be vital, as super-sub
Tommy Ludford showed good strength and composure
in the box to squeeze his shot past Mat Smith
and earn his team a share of the points.
Calne Eagles
0-2 Bratton
League Match - 27th February 2010
Bratton overcame Calne Eagles 2-0 in a hard
fought Division 2 encounter.
Bratton took the lead after 20 minutes, when a
cross from Ian Young was left by Eagles
centre-back Gary Wootten, totally wrong-footing
his keeper Kev Windsor, who could only watch
helplessly as the ball crossed the goal line. In
response, Calne showed some good attacking play,
with both Bobby Randal and Stu Windsor forcing
saves from Bratton keeper Luke Dalton.
In the second half, the game continued to be an
attacking affair. Calne thought they had
equalized, when a long distance shot from Bobby
Randal was diverted into the path of Stu
Windsor, who coolly slotted his shot past Luke
Dalton into the net. Despite the absence of a
flag, the referee decided to disallow the goal
and award a free-kick for offside.
Moments later, things appeared to be evened up
when Dan Cox appeared to be bundled over in the
Calne’s penalty area, but play was waved on.
However, Bratton put the result beyond doubt
with 15 minutes to go, when Sam Tucker hit a
powerful shot from distance though a crowded
box, leaving Kev Windsor no chance in Calne’s
goal.
Westwood Social 3-1 Calne Eagles
League Match - 20th March 2010
Westwood’s star striker Dan Thorne grabbed
himself a hat-trick to secure his team a league
double over Calne Eagles.
Westwood had initially come from behind, after
Eagles’ striker Tommy Ludford floated a sweet
shot from 20 yards out past goalkeeper Adam
Stevens. However, Westwood had only trailed for
five minutes when Thorne scored his first from
six yards out after the ball fell favourably for
him.
In the second half, Westwood started to control
the possession. They got their reward when
Thorne scored his second with a neat finish into
the top corner from just outside the box.
Westwood continued to look the most likely to
score with Eagles’ Keeper Kev Windsor making two
good saves to keep his team in the game.
Calne battled gallantly to find an equalising
goal, but with 13 minutes left, Dan Thorne
completed his hat-trick when he cleverly flicked
a Ben Cowdrey pass past Windsor in Calne’s goal.
Calne Eagles 2-3 Westwood Social
13th February 2010 – Division 2 Cup
Westwood booked their place in the semi-finals with
a 3-2 win over Calne Eagles. The game was a really
entertaining encounter, which in the end really
could have gone either way.
Despite playing some good football in the first 45
minutes, Calne’s recent defensive woes returned and
they gifted Westwood an early two-goal lead. After
only 10 minutes, a mix-up in Calne’s backline
presented prolific marksmen Dan Thorne with a simple
tap-in. Moments later, Dan Fricker scooped the ball
home from a corner to double his side’s lead.
In response, Calne created numerous good chances to
equalise. Their top scorer Stu Windsor was denied on
three occasions by Westwood keeper Adam Stevens.
However, defensively Calne continued to struggle and
were grateful to make it through to half-time having
only conceded the two goals.
In the second half, Calne mounted a gallant
comeback. They put Westwood under continuous
pressure and finally got their reward after 68
minutes, when Westwood goalkeeper Adam Stevens
handled a Tom Evans corner into his own net. Calne
continued to play the better football and equalised
with 10 minutes left, when a great cross from Nick
Cawley was fired home by Calne sub Tommy Ludford. In
the closing minutes of normal time, Calne’s Tom
Evans saw his shot come back off the post, into the
grateful hands of Adam Stevens.
Westwood regained their advantage right at the start
of extra time, when Dan Thorne struck again with a
superb run and finish. Calne pressed hard for an
equaliser, but as legs tired, chances came at a
premium. Westwood finally managed to see the game
through and secure their progression into the
semi-finals.
North Bradley 3-0 Calne Eagles
League Match – 6th February 2010
North Bradley claimed a hard fought 3-0 win against
familiar sparring partners Calne Eagles in this 2nd
Division clash at The Peace Memorial Ground.
Both teams’ play showed some good football throughout.
Calne Eagles looked the most likely to score early on,
when their livewire striker Stu Windsor was twice denied
by Bradley’s veteran keeper Mark Binns. North Bradley
nearly took the lead themselves when their top scorer
Pete Stephenson was denied on the goal line by Kev
Hamersley. Unfortunately, both players clashed heads in
the challenge, which resulted in Stephenson being forced
to leave the field with a nasty cut to his head.
North Bradley scored the opener after 20 minutes, as
Chadwick Cain forced the ball home following a
frenetic goal-mouth scramble. Within 10 minutes, they
had doubled their lead when Sub Rob Clarke‘s mishit
shot deceived Brett Cullen in Calne’s goal and spun just
inside the post.
In the second half, despite the score line, Calne Eagles
continued to play with a belief that they could get back
into the game. However, North Bradley put the result
beyond doubt with 30 minutes still to play, when a great
run and cross by James Taylor was headed home bravely by
Neil Maidment.
In the closing stages, the impressive Mark Binns made a
great save from Phil Gay, and Calne’s sub Tommy Ludford
put a rasping shot just over the bar. But by this stage
North Bradley had already secured the 3 points.
Heytesbury 5-2 Calne Eagles
League Match – 30th
January 2010
Heytesbury claimed a well deserved league victory against a
lacklustre Calne Eagles team.
The game was very open right from the start and both teams missed
numerous gilt-edged chances to take the lead early on. It was
Heytesbury who opened the scoring mid-way through the half when
James Harper headed home from a corner.
After the break, Calne’s usually stubborn defence could not
withstand the pressure that Heytesbury started to apply. Leigh
Kennedy doubled their lead when he dispossessed Eagles’ Captain Ian
Wilkinson on the edge of the box before finishing coolly. Then
centre-forward Paul Dredge gave his side an apparently unassailable
3-0 lead, when he smashed a superb volley past Roy Wenham in Calne’s
goal.
Calne Eagles’ prolific marksmen Stu Windsor scored a quick-fire
brace to drag his team back into the game with 20 minutes remaining.
However, Heytesbury secured a comfortable victory when Jason
Greatley and Kye Fennel scored two further goals, both from corners.
Calne Eagles 2-3 Castle
Combe
23 Jan - KO Cup Quarter-final
Striker Mark Sharratt scored a brace against his former club Calne
Eagles to fire Castle Combe into the semi-finals of the KO Cup.
The game was in doubt right up to the last minute, as Calne
desperately tried to clear a few small areas of surface water off
their pitch, with aid of garden forks and brooms. After consulting
with both managers, the referee decided to go ahead with the game.
This undoubtedly proved to be the right decision as both teams
served up an extremely sporting, wholehearted and above all
entertaining cup tie.
It was Calne Eagles who drew first blood after half an hour, when
Martin Riddell, under pressure from Calne’s Sam Rogers headed a Phil
Gay cross past his own goalkeeper.
Castle Combe started the second half in determined fashion and it
was only the aid of the woodwork and some inspired goalkeeping from
Calne’s Andy Windsor that kept the score at 1-0. However, the
pressure eventually told when Sharratt, who only transferred between
the two clubs in November, finished superbly from 15 yards out.
Calne Eagles responded well and retook the lead after 70 minutes
through Stu Windsor, who coolly lobbed Luke Jones in Castle Combe’s
goal, after latching onto a Rob Vowden through-ball. Combe this time
hit back within minutes. Mark Sharratt scored his second when he
pounced on a rebound following another good save from Windsor.
The game continued to go from end to end as defenders tired on the
heavy pitch. It was Castle Combe who emerged victorious, when Carl
Dawson squeezed the ball over the line following a goal mouth
scramble, with only 10 minutes remaining.
Calne Eagles passed the ball passed well in the closely stages, as
they pressed hard to force the goal that would take the game into
extra-time. Simon Vowden saw a rasping shot blocked by Mathew Hooper
and Stu Windsor also fired narrowly wide. But Castle Combe hung on
to claim their semi-final place.
Calne Eagles 1-2 FC
Northbridge
League – 16th January
A
superb second-half strike from Michael Grieve secured all 3 points
for FC Northbridge in their Second Division match against 10-man
Calne Eagles.
Due to the weather, both teams had been out of action for over a
month but it was Calne Eagles who appeared to be most rusty early
on. FC Northbridge dominated the opening minutes of the game with
Liam Brown hitting the woodwork after only two minutes. Shortly
after that scare, Will Browning and Kye Leather also saw shots
whistle just wide of Calne’s goal.
Calne soon got into their stride and the pace of their two strikers
Stu Windsor and Phil Gay soon had Northbridge stretched. It was this
pace that helped Calne open the scoring, when Windsor ran onto a Rob
Vowden through-ball and coolly finished past goalkeeper Luke Mayne.
Calne looked comfortable with their lead, but let FC Northbridge
back into the game when a looping a shot from Andy Wilson caught
goalkeeper Roy Wenham unawares, before dipping into the top corner
of the goal.
At
the start of the second half, Calne probably had the slightly better
chances and could have taken the lead when Phil Gay skillfully beat
two defenders before slicing his shot into the grateful hands of
Luke Mayne.
The game dynamic changed with 30 minutes remaining, when one of
Calne’s veteran players, Brett Cullen, received his first ever red
card (and the first for the club since March 08) for foul and
abusive language.
Consequently, FC Northbridge started to enjoy more possession and
managed to force more pressure on the home side. Calne still looked
dangerous on the counterattack, most notably through their teenage
wingers, Simon Notman and Sam Rogers, who both caused problems for
the Northbridge backline.
However, FC Northbridge scored the decisive goal with only 10
minutes left. Michael Grieve seized on a loose ball and with a
rasping shot from 25 yards out, scored a goal that was worthy of
winning such a tightly-contested game.
Calne Eagles 8-0
The Stiffs
League - 5th Dec
Calne Eagles emerged easy 8-0 winners in their Division 2 game
against The Stiffs.
Both teams had numerous players missing and were struggling to field
full squads. Calne Eagles were already missing 6 players, before
centre-back Gary Wootten and top scorer Stu Windsor pulled out at
short notice, through injury and flu respectively. This left them
naming veteran players Kev Windsor and Ron Hopkins on the bench for
the second time in three matches. However, their plight was nothing
compared to The Stiffs who had to battle out the entire game with
only 9 players.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Calne totally dominated possession from
start to finish. The away side showed plenty of resistance early on,
but once Brett Cullen had opened the scoring for Calne after 17
minutes with a well-taken header, the flood gates opened. Goals from
Alphie Archer, Vic Long, Rob Vowden (penalty) and two from Shaun
Jefferies gave Calne an unassailable 6-0 half-time lead.
The second half was once again all Calne Eagles', but they struggled
to create chances with the same ease as before. Nonetheless, Rob
Vowden scored his second and his team’s seventh after 58 minutes,
with a well-struck shot from just inside the box.
Calne finished the game with four players over 45 years old on the
pitch. It was oldest player of that quartet, 57 year old Ron
Hopkins, who finished off the scoring when he found the top corner
with a sweet shot from 20 yards out.
Calne Eagles
4-1 North Bradley
KO Cup Second Round – 28th November
Calne Eagles progressed into the quarter-final of the KO Cup with an
impressive win over fellow Division 2 side North Bradley.
Calne started the match at an extremely high tempo and as a result
totally dominated the first 45 minutes. They got the reward that
their play deserved after only 11 minutes when a superb cross from
new signing Sam Rogers set up Stu Windsor, who squeezed the ball
past Mark Binns in North Bradley’s goal at the second attempt.
The pace and the energy of Windsor and his strike partner Shaun
Jefferies continued to stretch North Bradley’s defence. Midway
through the half, Windsor added his second of the game, and his
tenth of the season, when he went clean through on goal and coolly
rounded Binns before tapping into the empty net. Calne all but
wrapped up the game before half-time, when Shaun Jefferies was
brought down in the box and Stu Windsor converted the penalty to
complete his hat-trick.
Calne started the second-half in much the same fashion, with Mark
Binns making numerous good saves from both Windsor and Jefferies to
keep the score at 3-0. However, on the hour mark, Jefferies did
finally get on the score-sheet. His initial shot was once again well
saved by Binns’ but the ball span up favourably for the striker to
head home from close range.
In the last 30 minutes, North Bradley started to play some good
football and had Calne fully stretched on numerous occasions, with
striker Craig Brown at the centre of most of their good attacking
play. With 17 minutes remaining, they got their reward when a
free-kick from Neil Maidment was not cleared by Calne and the ball
broke kindly to Rob Clark, who made no mistake from 10 yards out. In
the closing stages, Eagles’ sub Alphie Archer missed two good
chances to extend Calne’s lead. But by this point Calne’s place in
the next round was already safe.
FC
Chippenham Youth “A” 2-1 Calne Eagles
League – 21st November
FC Chippenham Youth “A” claimed their first home win of the season against Calne Eagles in heavy wind and rain at Stanley Park.
Calne played into the wind in the first half and FC Chippenham took
the lead after only 9 minutes, when Kelvin Page struck an unstoppable shot from distance right into the top corner of the net. They could have extended their lead after 15 minutes, when Eagles keeper Andy Windsor saved Mick Austin’s shot and Matt Spear hit the post from the rebound.
Despite being forced deep, Calne always looked dangerous on the counter with Shaun Jefferies and Phil Gay both missing good chances to equalise during the first half. However, just before half-time Calne, who were already threadbare, were dealt a blow when pacey striker Phil Gay pulled his hamstring and had to go off. With no other regular players on the bench, 57 year old Ron
Hopkins gallantly stepped into the breach.
Despite this, Calne started the half in positive mood and forced
numerous early corners. But they were left with a mountain to climb
when a speculative long range effort from Tom Porter
looped off the foot of Calne’s Kevin Hamersley, leaving his goalkeeper Andy Windsor stranded.
Calne pulled themselves back into the game, when another one of their veterans, 45-year old Nick Cawley, went clean through on goal and beat goalkeeper Mat Smith with a coolly taken finish. Moments later, Cawley had a good chance to equalise when he glanced his header just wide of the post. Calne’s Stu Windsor also saw a rasping 30 yard shot clip the post.
FC Chippenham always looked dangerous on the break and both Mick Austin and Matt Spear missed opportunities to put the game beyond doubt. Spear also had a goal ruled offside. However, in the end, this was of little consequence as they held on to claim all three points.
Calne Eagles 2-7 Foresters
League – 7th November
Second division pacesetters The Foresters scored five goals in the last half hour of an energetic game, to see off battling Calne Eagles at Priestly Grove.
Foresters totally dominated the early exchanges and got their reward after only 7 minutes, when good work from Gavin Klukowski set-up Graham Griffiths to open the scoring from close range. Foresters continued to dominate and forced numerous good saves out of Eagles goalkeeper Roy Wenham.
Totally against the run of play, Calne equalised after 22 minutes, when striker Stu Windsor outpaced the Foresters’ defence and coolly slotted his shot past Alex Shaftoe in the Foresters' goal. This gave Calne a boost and they started to gain a bit more composure in possession. However, the Foresters still looked dangerous and just before half-time Griffiths scored his second with a superb shot into the top corner of the net.
Foresters continued to control the game in the second half. However, their gung-ho style was once again exploited by Stu Windsor’s pace, when his pressure led to a horrible mix-up between Shaftoe and centre-back Wayne Bailey, which left the young striker with a simple tap-in.
The Forester’s restored their lead on the hour, when the outstanding Luke Turvey broke from midfield and lobbed a delicate shot over the stranded Roy Wenham. Calne still battled hard and both Simon Notman and Stu Windsor had chances to once again restore parity. But when Gavin Klukowski put his side 4-2 up with 20 minutes left, Calne's resistance faded.
In the closing stages, The Foresters continued to pass the ball with pace and accuracy and added a further three goals. Gavin Klukowski scored his second when he went clean through on goal. Terry Sheppard also got on the score sheet and with almost the last kick of the game, Roy Wenham let a Kane Udeh cross slip under his body and into the open net.
Westbury United 'A' 2-0 (aet) Calne Eagles
A&B Cup, 1st Round – 31st October
Westbury United secured a place in the second round of The A&B Cup, courtesy of two superbly taken goals deep into extra-time against fellow Division 2 side Calne Eagles.
With both teams coming off the back of consecutive clean-sheets in their recent league matches, it became very clear early on that this was going to be a closely contested match.
Westbury came nearest to opening the scoring in the first half, when a superb turn and shot from striker Dave Castle rebounded off Calne’s post and was cleared to safety by Gary Wootten. Westbury also hit the woodwork twice more, following goal-mouth scrambles. At the other end, Simon Vowden had a great chance when he ran from deep, but his shot was fired straight at goalkeeper Nathan Taylor.
In the second half, Westbury continued to have more of the possession but found chances very hard to come by, as they failed to really test Calne’s stand-in keeper Roy Wenham. Then in the last few seconds of normal time, Eagles appeared to be very unlucky not to be awarded a penalty, when Gary Wootten was bundled over in the penalty area.
In extra time, even as legs tired, the stalemate continued and it became obvious that it would probably take a goal of quality to stop the game going to a penalty shoot-out. This quality was provided by Westbury’s Adrian Chantrey, who showed great technique to volley home an unstoppable strike into the top corner of the goal, with only 10 minutes of extra time remaining.
However, Calne showed great fighting spirit and put Westbury under a lot of pressure in the closing stages. A good pass from Simon Notman sent fellow sub Bobby Randal clean through on goal. But after a great first touch, Randal couldn’t direct his shot on target.
Then with only two minutes to go, Stu Windsor also went clean through on goal and coolly slotted his shot past Taylor in Westbury’s goal. Despite there being no flag, the referee decided to consult Westbury’s club official. There was then what appeared to be a bizarre verbal confrontation between the two of them, which resulted in the assistant referee being shown a red card and the goal being disallowed!
In the last minute, as Calne desperately sought an equaliser, Westbury’s Chris Storey took full advantage of the space afforded to him inside the box, when he struck a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the net to send his team into the next round.
The Stiffs 0-5 Calne Eagles
League Match – 24th October
After a slow start to their campaign, Calne Eagles gained a second consecutive league win against bottom-placed side The Stiffs.
Calne dominated the possession throughout the match. They took the lead after 14 minutes, when Phil Gay poked the ball home from six yards out. They then doubled their lead soon after, when central midfielder Stu Windsor scored for the fourth consecutive match. Windsor then doubled his tally before half time when he forced a shot through the crowded penalty-box and past Andy Barlow in goal.
After the break, The Stiffs resorted to defending on the edge of their penalty, and despite long periods of possession and countless shots on goal, Calne struggled to add to their advantage.
With 20 minutes to go, The Stiffs had a five-minute period where they created three good chances to pull themselves back into the game. First, Matt Alland’s far-post cross had Eagles keeper Andy Windsor beaten before it was headed off the line by their centre-back Roy Wenham. Then Tom Evans cleared another Stiffs shot off the line from the resulting corner, this time denying Chris Benton. Moments later, Brian Holt fired a shot into the side netting, after he had managed to get in behind Calne’s backline.
In the closing stages, Calne reasserted themselves. With 10 minutes left, Stu Windsor, who had by now been moved up front, scored again to complete his hat-trick. Then in the final few minutes, Gareth Cook completed the scoring when he grabbed his first goal for the Eagles with a six yard screamer.
Westwood
Social 1-3 Calne Eagles
KO Cup, 1st Round – 17th October
This Division 2 clash in the KO Cup saw Calne Eagles gain a 3-1 win
over Westwood Social. This was the fourth time the teams had played
each other in little over a year and as with all the other
encounters there was little to choose between the sides.
The first half was really evenly contested with both teams intent on
playing attacking football. Calne took the lead after 20 minutes,
when Westwood’s Adam Stephens was penalised for hand-ball inside the
box. Westwood’s goalkeeper Martin Cowdrey got a hand to Stu
Windsor’s penalty but could not stop the ball from hitting the back
of the net.
Westwood were prevented from equalising soon after, when Ben Cowdrey
raced clean through on goal but saw his shot well-saved by Eagles’
keeper Andy Windsor. At the other end, Brett Cullen saw his strong
header tipped round the post by Cowdrey.
Calne doubled their lead after 50 minutes, when Phil Gay beat Martin
Cowdrey with a sweet strike from 20 yards out. Ten minutes later
Brett Cullen secured Calne’s place in the second round when he
rifled home an unstoppable shot from 15 yards out.
Westwood, however, continued to press and prolific striker Dan
Thorne was unlucky when he saw a sweet shot curl just wide of the
post. Andy Windsor also made another impressive save, once again
denying skilful striker Ben Cowdrey with a superb reaction save.
With 20 minutes left, Dan Thorne gave his side some hope with a
superb individual goal. But Calne shut up shop in the closing stages
and never looked like surrendering their place in the next round.
Byrons
Wanderers 6-1 Calne Eagles
Wilts Jnr Cup, 1st Round – 3rd October
Wiltshire League side Byrons Wanderers comfortably progressed into
the second round of the Wilts Jnr Cup, at the expense of Trowbridge
League side Calne Eagles
Despite having the lion's share of the possession in the first 20
minutes, Byrons Wanderers struggled to create any real clear-cut
chances early on. In response, Calne looked dangerous on the
counter-attack, most notably through attacking midfielder Stu
Windsor, who caused problems with numerous impressive breaks from
deep.
However, Byrons opened the scoring after 20 minutes, when a teasing
cross from Steven Gray was turned into his own net by Eagles’
centre-back Roy Wenham. This goal seemed to open the floodgates, as
Calne lost their defensive shape and Byrons took total control of
the game. Striker Johan Sutton went on to score a quick fire
hat-trick, as Calne were run ragged before the interval.
At 4-0 down, Calne returned for the second half and started to play
to their true potential. As a result, the game became much more even
and hard fought, with both teams playing a lot of good passing
football. Wanderers’ previously impenetrable defence started to get
stretched and the impressive Stu Windsor pulled a goal back for his
team after 65 minutes, when he ran from deep and neatly beat
goalkeeper Warren Jackson. However, shortly after the goal Calne
lost energetic midfielders Tom Evans and Andy Stickley through
injury and this seemed to knock their play slightly.
With 10 minutes to go, Byrons started to dominate the game again and
they scored two more goals, one from Niall Harrigan and a fourth for
Johan Sutton.
Calne Eagles
4-0 Heytesbury
League match – 26th September
Calne Eagles picked up their first points of the season with a 4-0
home victory over Heytesbury.
Calne, who had conceded an early goal in each of their previous
three matches, had the best possible start when, inside five
minutes, 16yr old striker Simon Notman headed home a Simon Vowden
corner. Moments later, Notman repeated the trick, this time from a
Gary Wootten corner, with the final touch coming off the tall
striker’s shoulder.
Heytesbury composed themselves following their shaky start and came
much more into the game during the remainder of the half, with their
midfielder playmakers Ore Francis and Chris Baker both seeing plenty
of the ball. It took a great save from Calne keeper Andy Windsor to
keep out Baker’s rasping drive mid-way through the half. In
response, Calne also continued to create chances of their own, with
both Mark Sharratt and Simon Notman both missing opportunities to
extend their side’s lead.
During half-time, entertainment was provided unwittingly by referee
Olly Ballinger, who had to scale a garden fence to retrieve the
match ball after some sneaky shooting practice went somewhat awry!
Calne Eagles slightly edged the second half and but for some
wasteful finishing should have wrapped the game up much sooner than
they did. However, the result was put beyond doubt in the last five
minutes, when another of Calne’s 16yr old players Stu Windsor weaved
his way through Heytesbury’s defence to put his side 3-0 up. Calne
sub Phil Gay then completed the scoring with the final move of the
game when he ran clean through on goal and coolly slotted his shot
past Heytesbury goalkeeper Nik Bungay.
Calne Eagles 5-1 Seend United Reserves
League match – 19th September
A very strong Seend Reserve side claimed a 4-1 win over Calne Eagles
in a sporting encounter at Priestley Grove.
Seend took control of the game after only 5 minutes when Dan Moore
put them in front from a corner. Jordan Evans then extended their
lead 10 minutes later when his teasing cross eluded goalkeeper Roy
Wenham and crept in at the far post.
In response, Calne played some good football but could not match
their opponents' cutting edge in front of goal. This was further
highlighted when Dan Moore clinically finished off a sweeping
counter-attack to give his team a comfortable 3-0 half-time lead.
After the break, Calne upped their game dramatically and started to
put Seend under far more pressure. They came close to the early goal
that they needed, when a superb save from Richard Hemings denied
16yr old midfielder Simon Notman. Calne continued to press and Seend
rode their luck when a miss-hit cross from Calne’s Kev Hamersley
rebounded off the far post back into the grateful hands of Hemings.
At the other end, Seend continued to look dangerous with Dan Moore
and Adam Potter both missing good opportunities to put the result
well and truly beyond doubt. However, it was Calne who scored the
next, when on 65 minutes, Mark Sharratt raced through on goal and
coolly rounded the goalkeeper to score his first goal for the club.
Calne pressed hard to force a second goal, which left them exposed
at the other end and Jordon Evans took full advantage when he
confidently struck home the game’s final goal with 10 minutes
remaining.
Bratton 5-1 Calne
Eagles
League match – 12th September
Bratton claimed their first league win of the season in
comprehensive style with a 5-1 at home against newly-promoted Calne
Eagles.
Bratton got off to a perfect start after only five minutes when
Calne’s entire defence failed to play to the whistle, thinking that
the ball had gone out for a corner kick. Bratton took full advantage
and Ian Young scored with a simple tap-in. Within 10 minutes,
Bratton had doubled their lead when Dan Cox raced clean
through on goal and confidently slotted his shot past Roy Wenham in Calne’s goal. Bratton all but wrapped the game up after only 20
minutes when Andy Simms‘ tame shot through a crowded penalty
box was deflected past Wenham by one of his own defenders.
Calne Eagles recovered their composure and showed plenty of spirit
after their shaky start and they competed much better for the
remainder of the game. They even gave themselves hope of a comeback
early in the second half, when prolific winger Shaun Jefferies
capitalised on a mistake by Bratton goalkeeper Sean Harvey to pull
one goal back for his team. However, only moments later, Bratton
regained their 3 goal lead when Andy Simms finished off a
fast flowing counter attack.
Bratton were reduced to 10 men with 25 minutes left, when one of
their one of their defenders was sent off for fouling Shaun
Jefferies when he was clean through on goal. Calne’s Simon Vowden
hit the subsequent free kick well over the bar, but Vowden showed
rather more accuracy soon after when he saw a well-struck free kick
from further out come back off the crossbar.
With two minutes remaining, Bratton capped off their fine
performance when Shane Newman put the final touch to a fine
passing move to complete the 5-1 score line
Calne
Eagles 0-1 Westwood Social
League match – 5th September
Two of the teams promoted from the 3rd Division, Calne Eagles
and Westwood Social, took on each other in a very close-fought
and sporting encounter at Priestley Grove in Calne.
Westwood started the much brighter of the two teams and their
strike partnership of Dan Thorne and Ben Cowdrey had Calne fully
stretched in the early stages of the game. The pressure finally
told after only 12 minutes, when prolific striker Thorne
finished well from 15 yards out.
Westwood continued to dominate during the rest of the first
half, with Thorne, Cowdrey and skilful winger Duncan Frew all
seeing further good efforts blocked. Adam Stephens also saw his
deflected long-range shot tipped over the bar by Calne
goalkeeper Roy Wenham.
In the second half, Calne composed themselves defensively and as
a result the game became a bit of stalemate, with both teams
initially struggling to create any good goal-scoring
opportunities.
With 25 minutes remaining, Calne brought on subs Rob Randal and
Simon Notman and these changes seemed to kick-start their
attacking play. Thereafter, Calne started passing the ball with
more fluency and created numerous good chances to equalise.
Westwood goalkeeper Martin Cowdrey saved well from both Brett
Cullen and Simon Notman, who was also unlucky when he had a good
effort come back off the post.
However, Westwood showed a lot of resolve and hung on to claim
their first 3 points of the season.
Pre-season Friendlies
Trowbridge Wanderers 9-1 Calne Eagles
Friendly - 8th August
Calne Eagles kicked off their pre-season friendlies against 1st
Division side Trowbridge Wanderers, who will almost certainly be
challenging for trophies during the coming season.
The Wanderers dominated possession from start to finish, however, it
took 20 minutes for them to break the deadlock, when they scored
with a free header from a corner kick. In response, Eagles battled
hard and were unlucky not to equalise when Shaun Jefferies ran clean
though on goal and saw his shot bounce off the post, with new
signing Rob Randal narrowly missing the rebound.
Trowbridge doubled their lead 10 minutes before half time, when
goalkeeper Andy Windsor and defender Roy Wenham both left each other
to deal with a teasing cross, which then crept in at the far post.
Then, right on the stroke of half time, Gareth Cook was also unlucky
when he deflected a long-range shot past his own goalkeeper.
Wanderers started the second half in rampant mood and scored 4 goals
inside the first 15 minutes. Calne rallied mid-way through the half
and scored a consolation goal when great work by Shaun Jefferies on
the left wing set up veteran Striker Nick Cawley, who finished well
from just inside the box. They were also awarded a penalty only
moments later but Steve Roberts saw his well struck spot-kick
rebound off the post and away to safety.
In the closing stages, as Calne ran out of steam, Trowbridge
attacked almost at will and scored a further 2 goals, to finish off
the game as 9-1 winners.
Despite the score line, the Eagles battled well throughout and
showed plenty of the spirit that served them so well during last
season’s campaign.
Steeple Ashton 3-2 Calne Eagles
Friendly - 15 August
Calne Eagles played their annual pre-season friendly against Steeple
Ashton and as usual they gave their 1st division hosts a really
competitive game.
Steeple Ashton started the brighter of the two teams and controlled
possession in the first 20 minutes. However, despite their pressure,
Ashton struggled to test stand-in goalkeeper Roy Wenham. This was
largely due to some great defending from Calne’s wholehearted
centre-back Gareth Cook, who made numerous last-ditch tackles.
Totally against the run of play, it was Calne who opened the
scoring, when a totally miss-hit shot from Steve Roberts fell kindly
to prolific goal scorer Shaun Jefferies, who made no mistake from
six yards out.
Steeple Ashton were back on level terms only moments later, when
Nathan Holloway’s shot went through a crowd of players and found the
bottom corner of the goal. Then on 30 minutes, Ashton took the lead
when Steve Coveney beat goalkeeper Roy Wenham to a loose ball, which
then ricocheted off both players before rolling into the open net.
Despite conceding the two goals, Calne started to play some better
football and the game started to become a far more even affair. Just
before half time Shaun Jefferies nearly levelled the score when he
saw a good effort rebound off the post.
Early in the second half, Calne’s Roy Wenham made two good saves to
keep his team in the game and make up for his earlier mistake.
However, Steeple Ashton did finally extend their lead, when former
Trowbridge Town player Guy Rowley punished some hesitant defending
from Calne and clinically fired home from 10 yards out.
Calne finished off the game by playing some good passing football
and pulled back a goal with 12 minutes left when Brett Cullen headed
home a Tom Evans corner. They also had a good shout for a penalty
turned down, when Shaun Jefferies went down under a challenge inside
Steeple Ashton’s penalty box.
Overall, it was a very good workout for the Eagles, who played some
encouraging football and certainly seem to have got last week’s
heavy defeat out of their system.
Calne Eagles
1-7 Foresters FC
Friendly match - 22 August
Calne Eagles played another extremely tough pre-season friendly
against last season’s Division 3 Champions Foresters FC. Despite
losing 7-1, the Eagles still showed plenty of good play and it was
only in last 20 minutes that the Foresters completely dominated,
scoring 5 of their 7 goals during that period.
Eagles’ manager Roy Wenham freely admitted that the Foresters' late
flurry of goals had much to do with his chopping and changing
players around the pitch in order to give all 5 of the team’s
substitutes a good run-out. However, that did not take away from the
fact The Foresters did play a lot of impressive football throughout
the entire game.
It was Calne who took the lead in the opening minutes, when new
signing Tommy Ludford coolly finished off a good move, that he
started himself, with a really good through-ball to striker Tom
Evans. The Foresters had to wait 20 minutes for their equaliser to
come, when Graham Griffiths finished neatly following a good passing
move. In response, Calne played some good passing football in the
first half and fully deserved to go in at the break with scores at
1-1.
In the second half, the Foresters gradually started to take control
of the game, but it took a mistake by Roy Wenham in Calne’s goal to
gift them the lead, when he allowed a shot from skilful midfielder
Luke Turvey to squirm through his legs just before the hour mark.
Despite the setback, Calne continued to show plenty of resilience.
However, when Graham Griffiths scored his second goal of the match,
the floodgates opened and The Foresters went on to show some
clinical form in the closing stages. Luke Turvey scored the fourth
goal, with Edwin Escott, Kane Udeh and player-manager Patrick
Johnson also getting on score sheet.
Calne Eagles 0-1 Trowbridge Wanderers
Res
Friendly match - 29 August
Calne Eagles went down 1-0 in their last pre-season friendly, in what was a very competitive and evenly fought encounter.
Trowbridge started the sharper of the two teams and made Calne pay after only 10 minutes, when Josh Ferguson stole a yard on his marker and finished superbly from just inside the box. Calne composed themselves thereafter and started to compete well all across the pitch. So they were unlucky not to equalise after 20 minutes when a superb long distance shot from impressive winger Andy Stickley cannoned back off the post with the goalkeeper well-beaten. Shortly after that, striker Tom Evans beat Wanderers’ offside trap but scooped his shot well wide of the goal.
The second half was equally well balanced, with Calne creating numerous good chances to equalise. However, on the counter-attack, Wanderers looked every bit as dangerous with all their best play coming from star striker Josh Ferguson, who was denied on three occasions by Eagles’ goalkeeper Roy Wenham.
Calne continued to press right to end of the match and created numerous half chances but Trowbridge defended well and hung on for the win.
