Calne Eagles 2-3 Bradford United Reserves

8th Sept 07

This was a competitive game between two closely matched sides. Calne had the worst possible start by conceding two goals in the first 10 minutes. But they then settled and started to play some good football and created numerous good chances before Alphie Archer pulled a goal back shortly before half time.

In the second half, Calne continued to press in search of an equaliser and Shaun Jefferies was unlucky not to score when his shot hit the post. However, Bradford extended their lead, with half an hour remaining, when an attempted cross deceived goalkeeper Andy Windsor and flew in at the far post.

Calne still continued to press and got their reward when a sharp finish from Shaun Jefferies, with 10 minutes left, set up a frantic finish. Brett Cullen and Jamie Davies both came close to equalising but Bradford United hung on to take the 3 points.

Mere Town Youth 2-8 Calne Eagles

15th Sept 07

Calne Eagles ended an 8 Game winless streak stretching back over 6 months when they defeated Mere Town Youth 8-2.

The first 25 minutes of the game was a tight affair with both teams scoring a goal apiece. However, through some incisive play Calne scored 3 quick goals to go in at half-time 4-1 up.

In the second-half Mere started the brighter and pulled a goal back through a penalty and then created a further 2 good chances to get themselves back into the game. But Eagles continued to look sharp on the break and soon added their fifth goal.

In the last 20 minutes Calne pulled away and scored a further 3 goals. Calne’s goal scorers were Shaun Jefferies 2, Shayne Southern 2, Jamie Davies 2, Gary Kelty and Steve Roberts

Calne Eagles 3-4 Broughton Gifford

22nd Sept 07

Broughton Gifford impressively came back from two goals down to make it through to the next round. Calne Eagles were the better side in the first Half and went in 2-0 up thanks to goals from Shayne Southern and Gary Kelty.

In the second half Broughton took control of the game and their pressure paid off when a deflected Simon Bagnall shot wrong-footed Eagles keeper Andy Windsor. However, against the run of play Shaun Jefferies restored the two goal lead.

Broughton then took complete control of the game as Calne capitulated and they scored 3 further goals through Dan Barnett 2 and Chris Turk to secure a 4-3 win.

Calne Eagles 0-3 Bromham Reserves

29th Sept 07

In this local derby, Calne Eagles fielded a team that included no fewer than 7 former Bromham players. It was a very open game from the start and the early exchanges were very even, with both teams creating some good chances to open the scoring. However, it was Bromham who made the breakthrough mid-way through the first half, when Eagles failed to deal with a corner and Rob Sandiford was left with a simple tap-in.

Bromham then extended their lead at 30 minutes thanks to a sublime finish from 25 yards by Jason Coles. They then took control of the game and extended their lead further, once again thanks to a long range shot, this time by Antony Butler. Consequently, Calne were 3-0 down at half time.

Calne Eagles played much better in the second half and were unlucky not to get at least a goal back. They hit the post twice through Shaun Jefferies and Gary Kelty, and when they did hit the target, they found Bromham keeper Neil Goodship in inspired form. In the end, Bromham held firm to take a comfortable 3 points.

Calne Eagles 2-1 Westlecot United

6th Oct 07

Calne Eagles progressed into the next round of the Wilts Jnr Cup by overcoming Wiltshire League side Westlecot United 2-1.

Eagles took the lead after 20 minutes, when Shaun Jefferies was pulled down inside the area. Gary Wootten confidently tucked away the resulting penalty. Calne continued to play the better football with Shaun Jefferies’ movement causing Westlecot’s defence real problems.

At the start of the second half, Westlecot's game improved, and with 25 minutes left, they got back into the game through a Rob Christie strike. However, Eagles regained the lead within 10 minutes, when Jefferies went through one on one with the keeper. From there they defended well and could have extended their lead further on 2 or 3 occasions.

Calne Eagles’ overall defensive performance was impressive with former striker Tom Evans, in particular, standing out.

Bratton Reserves 0-0 Calne Eagles

13th Oct 07

Bratton and Calne Eagles fought out a 0-0 draw, in which the respective defences definitely came out on top.

In the first half, Eagles were undoubtedly the better side and created numerous good chances. Shaun Jefferies had a shot well saved by Shane Rendall, Ian Wilkinson put a close range chance over the bar and Darren Axford had a rasping shot that Bratton were lucky to clear off the line.

In the second half, Bratton came much more into the game. However, Calne looked comfortable during open play and Bratton’s best chances all came from corners. Chris Fenwick came closest to scoring when his overhead kick bounced off the bar. However, in the end, neither team really had the guile to break the other down.

Calne Eagles 1-3 Great Western

20th Oct 07

Great Western came out on top in this fiercely contested game. They took an early lead after only 10 minutes from close range, through Stuart Tattie. They then went on to dominate possession for most of the first half. However, they were unable to force any further clear-cut chances and Eagles looked every bit as likely to score on the counterattack.

In the second half, Great Western started to take control but still couldn’t get the important second goal. Then against the run of play, Eagles won a free kick on the edge of the box and 44 year old Centre-Back Nick Cawley curled home a sweet strike. Calne then started to play some neat football and had a Shayne Southern goal disallowed and Shaun Jefferies went through one on one with the keeper but Kevin Hodgkinson saved his shot.

Then, with 10 minutes left, some sloppy marking from a Free Kick left Richard Boore free to set up Stuart Tattie for his second goal of the game. Eagles pushed hard for the equaliser, which left them exposed and Great Western wrapped up the 3 points when tireless midfielder Darren Axford mistimed a tackle in the box and Stuart Tattie stepped up to complete his hat trick from the penalty spot.

Seend Reserves 2-1 Calne Eagles

27th Oct 07

Seend Reserves came from behind against Calne Eagles to make it through to the next round. Calne took the lead on 20 minutes when veteran defender Nick Cawley scored from a direct free kick for the second consecutive game. However, after going behind, Seend passed the ball well and were unlucky not to equalise before half-time, when they hit the bar.

In the second-half, Seend played the better football, although they struggled to break through Calne’s stubborn defence. But with 25 minutes remaining, they equalised when a Seend player squeezed a shot through a crowded penalty box. Calne improved and played better in the closing stages but couldn’t prevent Seend going in front with 10 minutes left, when Dave Castle got the better of Eagles Captain Ian Wilkinson and fired past Keeper Andy Windsor. In response, Ian Wilkinson and Steve Roberts both had chances to equalise but Seend held on to win 2-1.

Redlynch & Woodfalls 7-1 Calne Eagles

3rd Nov 07

Calne Eagles travelled to the Hampshire border to play cup holders Redlynch & Woodfalls and were given something of a footballing lesson by a far superior opponent. Redlynch dominated possession in the first-half and went in at the interval 3-0 up.

Realising that they had nothing to lose, Eagles gave a much better account of themselves after the break and managed to match Redlynch for the first 25 minutes. However, they then conceded a penalty. Andy Windsor saved the first attempt only for the referee to order a retake for encroaching from which they scored.

Calne then began to run out of steam and Redlynch’s quality told as they scored 3 more quality goals. Eagles did get a consolation, when Shaun Jefferies was fouled in the box and Jamie Davies tucked away the resulting penalty.

The Stiffs 2-2 Calne Eagles

10th Nov 07

The Stiffs played host to Calne Eagles who twice came from behind to earn themselves a point. Eagles had the better of the first half but struggled to turn possession into chances.

In the second half the game really opened up and both sides were frequently stretched defensively. The Stiffs first goal came on 60 minutes, from Rob Elliott who struck a neat finish from just inside the area. Calne responded well and 10 minutes later worked a really good move which set up in Shaun Jefferies whose shot was saved by Damien Berrely, but Steve Roberts followed up to tap in the rebound.

However, The Stiffs soon regained the lead when Calne failed to deal with a corner which allowed Nathan Litterick to tap in from close range. Calne were kept in the game thanks largely to keeper Andy Windsor who pulled off 2 fine saves, which proved crucial as with only 5 minutes to go they were awarded a penalty for a hand ball and Jamie Davies stepped up to equalise from the spot.

Calne Eagles 0-0 Trowbridge Wanderers

17th Nov 07

Calne Eagles and Trowbridge Wanderers played out a really hard-fought 0-0 draw, in which both goalkeepers played starring roles.

Wanderers completely dominated possession in the first half and probably deserved to go in at half-time ahead. Chris Penelhum came closest to scoring, when his close range shot just cleared the bar. Wanderers also created numerous other good chances but found Calne Keeper Andy Windsor in fine form.

Eagles brought on subs Shaun Jefferies and Gary Kelty at half-time and this gave their performance a much needed boost. Consequently, the second half was much more open, with both teams pushing men forward in search of the win. Calne created the better chances, with Jamie Davies twice coming close and a Nick Cawley free kick forcing a fine save from Wanderers keeper Rob Newton.

Tireless midfielder Tom Barnett caused Calne constant problems throughout and Wanderers always looked capable of grabbing themselves a winner. Then, in the dying minutes, Rob Newton pulled off the save of the game from Eagles Captain Ian Wilkinson, which ensured that the points were shared.

Broughton Gifford 3-0 Calne Eagles

24th Nov 07

Second placed Broughton Gifford earned a well-deserved 3-0 victory over Calne Eagles.

Broughton took the lead in the first 10 minutes when Richard Radcliffe headed home powerfully at the back post. Apart from the goal, there was very little to choose between the 2 sides in the first-half, and Shaun Jefferies and Jamie Davies both came close to equalising.

Broughton really upped their performance in the second half and dominated most of the play. However, despite Broughton’s supremacy Calne will be disappointed to have gifted two goals through defensive mistakes. First, Andy Windsor was lobbed when he misjudged an over-hit free kick from Phillip Strange, and then only minutes later, a Tom Evans own-goal wrapped up the game for Broughton.

Calne Eagles 3-2 The Stiffs

1st Dec 07

An eleventh hour switch of venue allowed the game between The Stiffs and Calne Eagles to go ahead after Stanley Park was declared waterlogged.

Calne played with the wind in the first half and took full advantage. They took the lead after 15 minutes through Brett Cullen, when his left wing cross caught out keeper Pete Stephenson. The Eagles lead was then extended further when Darren Axford struck an unstoppable shot from 25 yards out, which flew into the top corner.

The Stiffs pressed forward in the second-half and got a goal back when Rob Elliott scored from a well struck free-kick. However, Calne continued to look dangerous going forward and restored their two goal cushion when a smart lay-off by new signing Perry Kinneir set-up Shaun Jefferies, who forced the ball home from six yards out.

The Stiffs continued to show plenty of spirit and Rob Elliot once again reduced their deficit, with 15 minutes remaining, following a goal-mouth scramble. But Eagles defended well and hung on to claim a 3-2 victory.

Calne Eagles 5-5 Bratton Reserves

15th Dec 07

Two of the lowest scoring teams in the division, Calne Eagles and Bratton Reserves shared 10 goals during a manic game at Stanley Park. Ironically, when the two teams had met earlier in the season the game had ended 0-0.

After a very tight start to the game, it was Bratton who scored first in the twentieth minute when Dave Jones broke the offside trap and slotted past keeper Andy Windsor. They then doubled their advantage 5 minutes later when Dave Jones got the better of the home defence to score his second. However, Calne always looked likely to get back into the game and right on half-time Jamie Davies’ persistence was rewarded when he slipped a through ball past advancing keeper Shane Rendall.

Within a minute of the second half, Eagles had equalised when the impressive Davies scored his second. Eagles then took the lead, this time through a excellent strike from a tight angle from Brett Cullen. Then a great strike from distance by Richard Wyatt made it 3-3. Jamie Davies then completed his hat-trick with a superb lob following a poor goal kick. However, once again Bratton battled back and Sean Bennett scored with a header at the far post.

With five minutes remaining, it looked like Calne had secured all the points when Shaun Jefferies scored their fifth goal. But in the last few seconds Bratton forced a corner from which James Rygor headed home a dramatic equaliser.

Calne Eagles 1-2 Trowbridge Wanderers

26th Jan 08

Trowbridge Wanderers claimed a 2-1 win over Calne Eagles, in what was a very open and entertaining game at Stanley Park.

Calne Eagles started brightly and their good possession was rewarded when new signing Adam Bewley set up Brett Cullen, who confidently struck home his third goal in as many games. Wanderers then played their way back into the game and created some decent chances. Jamie Moth coming closest when he sent a close range shot just wide.

In the second half, Wanderers played with the wind and subsequently forced Calne to defend for extended periods. However, Calne were always dangerous on the break and looked just as likely to score as they did in the first half, most notably when Adam Bewley put a shot over the bar from close range with the score still 1-0.

With half an hour left, Wanderers got their equaliser when an in-swinging corner wasn’t cleared and Charlie Heydon squeezed the ball in to the net from close range, past a despairing tackle from Darren Axford. Ten minutes later, Heydon struck again, this time with a clean strike from just inside box. Calne pushed forward in search of an equaliser and Brett Cullen was denied a second goal when keeper Liam Newbie saved bravely with only five minutes remaining. Thereafter, Trowbridge defended well and hung on to claim their place in the next round.

Calne Eagles 2-2 Mere Town Youth

2nd Feb 08

Calne Eagles and Mere Town Youth shared a point a-piece during a fiery contest at Stanley Park.

Mere Town were the better side in the first half, their passing and movement forcing Calne to defend for long periods. This pressure was rewarded when in the twentieth minute Mathew Carter struck a shot through a crowd of bodies to make it 1-0. Mere continued to press forward but Calne defended well and made it through to half-time without conceding again.

The second half was a much more even affair, as Calne started to compete more and pass the ball better. Consequently, with 60 minutes gone, a through-ball from Gary Wootten released Adam Bewley, who coolly slotted home the equaliser. Then a few minutes later Mere were reduced to 10 men, when substitute Glen Ings was sent off for foul and abusive language.

Eagles continued to press men forward and were awarded a penalty when Keeper Wayne Stokes fouled Tom Evans, allowing Jamie Davies to score his fourth spot kick of the season.

Mere continued to battle and Ben Strong was unlucky not to equalise when his shot came back off the post. However, with 12 minutes remaining a clever flick from Centre Forward Adam Scourse wrong-footed Calne’s defence to creep over the line. Both teams failed to create any more good chances in the closing stages and the game finished 2-2.

Calne Eagles 1- 4 Seend United Res

9th Feb 2008

In-form Seend United Reserves gained their 6th consecutive league win by overcoming battling Calne Eagles 4-1 at Stanley Park.

Seend started strongly and were 1-0 up within ten minutes, when Danny Griffith finished neatly from just outside the box. They extended their lead at 15 minutes, when Man of the Match Ralph Plummer scored with a deft touch from close range.

Calne then steadied themselves and started to compete much more, and although Seend still continued to pass the ball around impressively, they struggled to create any further good chances to score.

At half time, substitute Shaun Jefferies came on to give Calne a much needed boost, and on 55 minutes, it was Jefferies who set up Jamie Davies to score from a tight angle. The game then really opened up as both teams threw men forward in search of another goal. Calne Eagles’ Nick Cawley came closest to scoring when his shot was well blocked on the line.

In the dying minutes, as a tiring Calne pushed men forward in search of an equaliser, Seend scored a further 2 goals through Dan Humphrey and Danny Griffith.

Bradford United 4-2 Calne Eagles

16th February 2008

Bradford United remain unbeaten at home after defeating Calne Eagles 4-2.
Bradford took the lead after only five minutes when a mix-up between Centre Back Roy Wenham and Keeper Andy Windsor let in Jamal Ayoub for an easy tap-in. Calne Eagles hit back instantly through a Jamie Davies penalty, after Shaun Jefferies was pushed inside the box.

The frantic start to the game continued, when Skip Ayoub got away from Ian Wilkinson and slipped his shot past the advancing Andy Windsor. However, Calne hit back once more when impressive play from Brett Cullen set up Shaun Jefferies for a tap-in from close range.

In closing stages of the half, a free kick into Calne’s box was not properly cleared and Skip Ayoub put Bradford 3-2 up with a sharp finish.

Bradford completed the scoring early in the second half when Kegan Smart scored from a corner and from then on they took control of the game and claimed all 3 points.

Calne Eagles 1-2 Rowde Sports

23rd February 2008

Calne Eagles went down 2-1 against Rowde Sports at Stanley Park, but were desperately unlucky not to have come away with a point, in what was a very open but evenly balanced game.

Playing with the wind at their backs, Rowde had the majority of the procession in the first half. On 15 minutes, a well-worked move allowed former Devizes Town striker Jamie Mullings to net the opener. Rowde continued to press and forced countless corners but were unable to extend their lead as Eagles defended resolutely.

The second half saw the roles reversed. Calne took control, and nearly equalised within seconds of the kick-off, when Shaun Jefferies went clean through and forced a good save from keeper Ashley Robinson.

Calne’s neat passing continued to cause Rowde problems and on 62 minutes Jamie Davies broke clear of the last defender. Although Ashley Robinson saved his shot, Shaun Jefferies followed up to score a simple tap-in.

Calne continued to push men forward in search of the equaliser and created several good chances. Danny Thompson saw his long-range shot come back off the crossbar to safety, and Ashley Robinson once again saved well from Jamie Davies. But Rowde always looked dangerous on the break, and they would have regained their lead from a corner but for Tom Evans’ clearance off the line.

Then with only 2 minutes left, Jamie Mullings skillfully bypassed two Calne defenders and then squared the ball to Sam Weller, who scored from six yards out. Calne threw men forward in a desperate attempt to get back on level terms but Rowde hung-on to gain all 3 points.

FC Chippenham Youth A 0-5 Calne Eagles

8th March 2008

Calne Eagles gained a 5-0 win in their match with FC Chippenham Youth A at Stanley Park.

FC Chippenham played with the wind in the first half and had the majority of possession but they struggled to create chances against a well organised Eagles’ defence. In response, Calne’s passing was sharp and they created the better chances, with Jamie Davies twice missing good opportunities to score.

With 30 minutes gone, Calne opened the scoring when a wayward shot from Brett Cullen was redirected back on target off the chest of a quick-thinking Shaun Jefferies.

Calne Eagles then doubled their lead 2 minutes after the restart, when Nick Cawley tapped in from close range following a corner kick. From there on Eagles took control.

The game was put beyond Chippenham’s reach 10 minutes later, when Jamie Davies struck a rasping shot from just inside the box. In the last fifteen minutes of the game, substitutes Steve Roberts and Adam Bewley completed the scoring for Calne.

Calne Eagles 9-1 FC Chippenham Youth A

15th March 2008

Calne Eagles completed the double over FC Chippenham Youth A, with an emphatic 9-1 win at Stanley Park.

The first half was very open, with both teams playing some good football, but it was Calne who scored first after 15 minutes when Jamie Davies finished off a neat move. They doubled their lead ten minutes later when Brett Cullen tapped one in at the far post following good work from Shaun Jefferies.

With thirty minutes gone, it looked like Eagles had wrapped up the points when Jamie Davies scored from the penalty spot. But shortly before half time, a very good finish from Kotse Petrov gave FC Chippenham some hope.

However, within a minute of the second half kicking off, Calne regained their 3 goal lead, when a poor back-pass let in Jamie Davies to complete his hat-trick. From there on, Calne completely took control of the game. Shaun Jefferies scored 2 good goals, both set up by Darren Axford, before centre-back Roy Wenham coolly slotted home a penalty, to make it 7-1.

Shaun Jefferies then completed his hat-trick, before sub Steve Roberts rounded off the scoring.

Bromham Reserves 5-2 Calne Eagles

22nd March 2008

Bromham extended their unbeaten run to six matches, by beating local rivals Calne Eagles 5-2 in a competitive and entertaining game.

Despite Bromham starting the game well, it was Calne Eagles that took the lead after 30 minutes, when Danny Thompson scored direct from a corner. However, Bromham bounced straight back and equalised 10 minutes before the interval, when Jim Sandiford headed in at the far post, also from a corner.

In the second half, despite the windy conditions, both teams continued to play good football and it was Bromham who scored next when the impressive Tom Slater got in behind Calne’s defence and coolly placed his shot beyond the goalkeeper Andy Windsor.

Calne then rallied, and had a penalty appeal turned down when Nick Cawley went down in the box and shortly after that Shaun Jefferies was put clean through on goal following a good pass from Darren Axford, but Luckily for Bromham, the referee stopped the play to caution Jason Cole for a late tackle on Axford.

Bromham then extended their lead when Sam Paget neatly finished off an impressive passing move. Calne then temporally lost composure and Bromham’s clinical all-round play saw them score a further 2 goals through Sam Paget and Tom Slater. Bromham’s Dean Rudman also had a penalty saved by Andy Windsor.

Late in the game, Calne Eagles scored their second goal, when free-scoring winger Shaun Jefferies hammered home a shot from close range, following good work from Brett Cullen and Nick Cawley.

Calne Eagles 3-4 Broughton Gifford

29th March 2008

Broughton Gifford staged a remarkable comeback from 3-0 down to claim all 3 points in an incident packed match at Stanley Park.

Broughton won the toss and decided to play into the fierce wind that was blowing the length of the pitch. Calne Eagles consequently took control of the game, and despite the many very frustrating offside decisions, always looked capable of scoring goals.

Calne opened the scoring after 10 minutes when Shaun Jefferies’ powerful shot slipped through the fingers of Keeper Julian Putt. They then extended their lead when Jamie Davies comfortably beat Broughton’s attempted offside trap to slot his goal coolly home, with the referee choosing to ignore the inevitable flag.

Then against the run of play, Calne’s centre-half Roy Wenham clumsily tripped-up pacey centre forward Leigh Rowles-Hitchcock inside the box to concede a penalty. Rowles-Hitchcock took the penalty himself, only for Andy Windsor to make his second consecutive penalty save.

Calne continued to press and the lively Davies went on to score his second goal of the game to make it 3-0. However, shortly before half-time Leigh Rowles-Hitchcock managed to break clear of Calne’s defence, clinically avoiding the advancing Andy Windsor, to score what proved to be the crucial goal for his team.

In the first 15 minutes of the second Half, Eagles coped well with the strong headwind, until Kevin Hamersley was harshly adjudged to have fouled inside the box. Rowles-Hitchcock once again took the penalty and this time just managed to squeeze his shot past Windsor.

Moments later, the game was turned on its head when Broughton’s Rich Radcliffe was sent off for lashing out at Jamie Davies. Calne’s Nick Cawley also saw red for retaliation, as did apparent peace-keeper Leigh Rowles-Hitchcock.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Broughton managed to pull level when sub Chris Turk headed in from close range. Broughton’s winning goal came from Sam Johnson who struck a stunning shot from distance into the top corner, with 15 minutes remaining. Despite the Eagles pushing hard for an equalizer they couldn’t get the breakthrough they needed.

In the closing minutes, Shaun Jefferies, who has only been booked once in the last 4 years of football, was sent off for his second yellow card.

Trowbridge Wanderers 2-2 Calne Eagles

5th April 2008

Trowbridge Wanderers stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to 7 games when they twice came back from a goal down to share the points with Calne Eagles.

The first half was a very tight affair, with both teams struggling to create chances. Wanderers came closest to opening the scoring after 15 minutes, when Calne keeper Andy Windsor impressively tipped Chris Penelhum’s rasping shot over the bar.

However, it was the Eagles who drew first blood after half an hour of play, when Adam Bewley’s wayward cross reduced Wanderers' keeper Liam Newbie to a spectator as the ball sailed into the net.

Within minutes of the second half, Wanderers got their equaliser when James Harman swept the ball home at the far post, following a mis-timed clearance by Darren Axford. Then Wanderers had their best spell of the game and only good defending and impressive goalkeeping from Andy Windsor prevented them from taking the lead.

Then, completely against the run of play, a through-ball from Danny Thompson sent Jamie Davies clean through on goal, who finished confidently to score his seventeenth goal of the season. Davies then had a further two good chances to extend Calne’s lead but adept goalkeeping from Liam Newbie kept him at bay.

Wanderers sub Rob Jacques completed the scoring with only 12 minutes remaining, when he ran onto a long ball and slipped his shot past Andy Windsor.

Great Western 4-2 Calne Eagles

12th April 2008

Champions-elect Great Western claimed a further 3 points with a 4-2 win at the Recreation Ground, but they were made to work hard against a spirited Calne Eagles.

Playing with the wind, Great Western took the lead in the very first minute, when Calne goalkeeper Andy Windsor could only parry a well struck free-kick into the path of Luke Wolfe who scored a simple tap-in.

Great Western dominated possession for the remainder of the half and could have doubled their lead from the penalty spot, when Darren Axford brought down Luke Wolfe just inside the area. Wolfe took the penalty himself, only to see Andy Windsor save his third penalty of the season.

However, the unrelenting pressure finally told when only 5 minutes before the break, Calne centre-back Roy Wenham put the ball into his own net trying to clear a corner. Then only a minute later it appeared the game was over when Luke Wolfe raced clean through and finished convincingly to make it 3-0.

Calne had the best possible start to the second-half when Danny Thompson scored direct from the kick-off, catching Great Western’s keeper James Whitehead unawares. This gave Eagles the lift they needed and the game became much more evenly balanced thereafter. Both teams played some good football with both Great Western’s Dave Wolfe and Calne Eagles' sub Nick Cawley both going close.

With 20 minutes remaining, Danny Thompson once again decided to shoot from distance, this time from a free-kick at least 5 yards inside his own half. Again, James Whitehead struggled to deal with the shot and could only parry it onto the cross-bar, Nick Cawley reacted quickest and fired the loose ball into the roof of the net.

Calne Eagles finished the game as the strongest team and they saw shots from both Darren Axford and Tom Evans narrowly miss the target.

However, they could not get the breakthrough that they needed, and with virtually the last kick of the game Great Western sealed the points when Russell Gibbings fired home following a corner kick.

Seend United Reserves 5-3 Calne Eagles

19th April 2008

Seend United Reserves beat Calne Eagles 5-3 in a game that contained some very good finishing from both sides. Most notably from Seend’s Dan Humphries who bagged four of his team's goals.

Calne started brightly and took the lead after only 10 minutes when their player-manager Roy Wenham headed home a Danny Thompson free kick. They then further extended their lead when Jamie Davies powerfully finished from a tight angle.

Seend came back strongly and after 25 minutes Dan Humphries hammered home a shot at the far post following a corner that was not fully cleared. Moments later they were level when Danny Thompson was caught in possession on the edge of the box and the ball broke once again to Humphries, who confidently struck his shot past keeper Andy Windsor.

Then with half-time fast approaching, Humphries completed his hat-trick when he got the better of two Calne defenders following a long pass up field.

Calne regained their composure at the start of the second half, as they searched for a way back into the game. However, two superb individual goals firstly by Dave Castle and then Humphries put the game seemingly beyond Calne’s reach.

With 10 minutes remaining, a superb long distance shot from veteran striker Nick Cawley gave the Eagles some hope. Then only moments later both Adam Bewley and Steve Roberts had good chances to score for Calne, which might have had set up an interesting last few minutes, but Seend United hung on to claim a deserved 3 points.
